A spreadsheet was made by MS Word (xls file). Multiple cells are selected either by dragging the mouse or by clicking on one cell then the shift key for the other. The selected cells are highlighted in blue. To reformat one can either right click in the selected region to get the context menu or Format -> cells is selected from the menu bar. In either case, Numbers tab is selected in the dialog box, number category, and format general is selected. After clicking "OK" there is no effect.
