I have tried it with a few simple test documents in OOo 1.9.87 and it works. I did the what you did and all is OK. In the attached file here, go to tools, options, calc view, Outline simbols. The symbols did not reapear untill close and reopen. Strange. The data was made visible. But this is not correct behaviour of the program. Data grouped should have been imported as grouped (this is an existing feature in OO, so why not), or a message should have been given to the user, or some help document.
