I have confirmed that the problem still exists under 3.0.0 OOO300m5. It appears that it may be due to the fact that MS Excel will reach across open workbooks to find definitions of both NAME DEFINEs and VBA MACROS. If it is true that OOCALC cannot use VBA MACROS there should at least be a way to print them out from old Excel spreadsheets so one doesn't have to boot Windows (and Excel) (if one can even do so). I thought the entire point of Open Office was to not have to use closed source! And the reaching across workbooks for definitions is essential -- otherwise one could potentially have to enter hundreds (maybe thousands) of definitions in every single workbook which needs to use those definitions. And there isn't a way to copy (export+import) Excel or OO name defines that I am aware of. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The spreadsheets are highly interconnected in that they may reference specific sheets and cells in other files, or even reference defined names (which in turn reference specific sheets and cells within those sheets). If I attempt to load these sheets I will crash OpenOffice. This is highly annoying as it not only takes down any open OOCALC files but the OOWRITER files as well. The recovery option does not work as it will crash during recovery (perhaps one should not enter a file into the recovery list until it has been successfully opened?!?). I strongly suspect that the problem here may be in the conversion of Win2K filenames into valid Linux filenames. Windows (Excel) seemed to have a multi-level file location strategy that involved something like a full pathname, followed by the current directory, followed by the opening of a directory browser to allow the user to navigate to the current location for the file. That does not appear to be provided under OpenOffice. The attempts by OpenOffice to parse what are probably embedded full windows pathnames, e.g. U:\Users\bradbury\ExcelFiles\PhysProp.xls is probably what is generating the problem. I have files available which *will* reliably generate the bug (and abort all running soffice applications) but due to the fact that they contain somewhat proprietary information I would prefer to turn them over to the specific individual who will be fixing this problem rather than submit them to the issues database. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
