Currently I doubt that this issue will be fixed, because still we do not have
any concrete bug description

@jmichae3:
"There are lots of ..." is not a bug report due to the guidelines.
Please contribute concrete information like:
In Cell Tabsexx.xx EXCEL shows ..., pls. see screenshot, OOo shows ..., pls. see
screenshots (reason might be xml lines ... with "...").

I just saw the bug fix list for 3.2 and this one isn't on it. what happened? I
will wait, but to be frank, the (probably vast) majority of office documents out
in the workplace are Office 2003 documents, including resumes. Not Office 2007.
 so this should be a priority shouldn't it?

issue 95256 talks about relative references which I brought up and it seems will
not be fixed until 3.2 - but the problem with the header still remains.

Is it possible that between different Service Packs of Excel 2003 the XML format
changes? is that why somebody has something different than mine?

I am on Office 2003 SP3

well,
1. it appears that OOo stuffs a lot of extra column and row data

in the file, which is not necessary.

2. the schemas are different.
actual excel:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40";>
OOo3 output (notice the differences like :component:spreadsheet):
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40";
xmlns:o="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance";
xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet"
xmlns:x2="http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/excel/2003/xml";
xmlns:ss="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet"
xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel">

3. given the log information from a recent very small 3-entry sheet (2 numbers
and an AVERAGE() in OOo, an attempt to open in Excel reveals this log file:

XML Spreadsheet Warning in Table
REASON: Bad Value
FILE:   C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\My
Documents\average-can-i-open-this-ooo3-in-excel.xml
GROUP:  Row
TAG:Cell
ATTRIB: Formula
VALUE:  of:=AVERAGE([.A1:.A2])

excel output:

OOo3.0 xml output:

the only way I could fix up the XML file so it would import into Excel 2003 was
to put it in some sort of RC format, which I know nothing about.

which made the formula absolutely absolute, but at least it imported.

summary: there is a big incompatibility problem in the format of OOo3.0.0. it is
currently writing output incorrectly to be compatible with Excel 2003, which is
the whole goal. excel is choking on the of: in front of the formulas. it is
also choking on the formula references, which are not in RC-relative format.

There are some known problems withs xml-files, for example
problem with SUM in issue 94261 and the wrong import of sheet names is tracked
in issue 90743. Please reduce the file to focus on one problem that is not yet
tracked. If you find more than one problem, file a separate issue for each of
them.

@billcherry1: You problems are different from import and export with xml format.
Please read http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/basic_rules.html and then
file an own issue for your problems.

XML format is a format supported by Office 2003. try it. do a file|Save As.
Unfortunately, OOo3.0.0 isn't currently doing it right. this format is new to
OOo but old to Office 2003.

I am having the same issue with OOo3, cannot reopen spreadsheets saved as .xls,
and cannot successfully reset file association. Also, all .doc files now have
a file association with Wordpad, not writer. I need to be able to create files
in Open Office that are compatible with Microsoft Office.

Office 2003 compatibility took a dive in 3.0.0.

I tried the spreadsheet. The XML format is broken. it looks like it is putting
formulas into the XML file like maybe it is supposed to, but Microsoft Excel
2003 won't open the file that OpenOffice makes. it complains "Table" and error
dumps into a log file.

Nor will OOo spreadsheet open a complicated multi-tabbed spreadsheet with
references between tabs I made with Office 2003.

attached is a real excel multitabbed 2003 xml file with references between tabs.
 calc is doing some awful strange things to the formulas, like adding extra
right perens on functions, etc.
file in question is the URL
http://JesusnJim.com/z/can-i-open-this-excel-in-ooo3.xml
it is a real excel file. the formulas look very different from that used by
OOo. but OOo 3.0.0 won't open it. opens fine in Excel 2003 & I can edit &
resave.

so this is both an import and an export problem. both are broken.
