The only way to remove them is either by turning (ELS) off or by deleting the icon entry entirely from Commands List under Toolbar Content. Problem reproduction steps: 1) In Calc, activate ELS (Options Language Settings Languages) by selecting the checkboxes enabling support for Asian and/or CCTL (complex text layout) languages. 2) Customize the Format toolbar in Calc to include the four icons for alternative text direction (right to left [text], left to right [text], , right to left [paragraph], top to bottom [paragraph]) 3) Try to remove the appearance of the icons by deactivating the corresponding checkbox.
