Tested it with native 3.1.1 and 3.2 dev build OOO300m6 on WinXP, ubuntu 9.10 and SUSE 11. Do you work on a certain Linux distribution, e.g. ubuntu or Fedora running the by-packed OOo build? The file saved and closed, but when I opened it again, the notes weren't there. When I tried creating a doc file in OO and saving it with notes in it, OO crashed.
