I think I may have solved this issue. For me, it was related to apostrophes in
folder names, and I got errors with OOo 1.1.4 and with OOo 2.0 beta (M120-130).

To reproduce:

0. Create a .pdf file. Give it an arbitrary name.

1. Move the target file to a test directory. Ensure that the folder name
contains an apostrophe. Example: /home/user/Documents/test'ing/arbitrary.pdf

2. Open OOo and create a new writer doc.

3. Insert - Hyperlink.

4. On the left side, click Document.

5. Provide the path to your chosen document in the test'ing folder, or click
the button and search for it.

6. All other fields are irrelevant. Click Apply then Close.

7. Click on your hyperlink. You should receive the following error message:

No corresponding external application could be found for the given file type.
Please check the OpenOffice.org settings.

The message may be different in OOo 2.0 beta or RC1. The apostrophe thing would
explain why I (and possibly others) may have been experiencing the problem but
the developers could not reproduce it.

This issue is still present in OOo 1.1.4. I'm using it on SimplyMEPIS, and I
get the same error message when clicking on hyperlinks to .pdf documents. As to
changing preferences, there doesn't seem to be a way to change the OOo
preferences to tell it to launch Acrobat Reader, or gv, or any other program.
The only thing I've found is Tools - Options - OOo - External Programs -
File Manager, but submitting a link to any known Linux file manager doesn't
change anything.
