Thank you! I think the best way would be to implement both types of highlighting and make it user configurable: the "permanent" one and the one that highlights something only one the cursor is at the right place (ie. brackets when it's between them). Also, highlighting of commands (matrix, over, size...), operators (+, -, =) and special charaters (%omega, %beta...) would be very useful when dealing with large formulas. So, taking the example of (((a+b)c)d(e+f)); if I click on the second bracket, the bracket after the c is highlighted.
