The Office shall never overrule a wrongly set language (i.e. by doing an
Englisch check on text that is set to Danish.
Set to Worksforme.
Note that from OOo 2.4 on, there will be a status bar entry that shows the
language set at the current cursor position resp. the current selection. This
enables the seeing user to quickly see what language is set and also to quickly
change it to the desired one.

@ osavill : in OOo language is an option of the font of a character. If you
choose a language in OOo options (tools options linguistic) it is only for
default formatting. It does not have effect on existing documents.
In OOo 2.4 spellchecker says that words in first paragraph are in Danish and
detect that it may be, in fact, in English.

I think this issue can be closed as worksforme.

Hmmm, just a few points.

1) Word has no trouble with this document. It has been told to use the English
dictionary and it sensibly checks the spelling against this dictionary if it
knows of no other. If the word is actually in Danish then it simply shows up as
a spelling error. Install the Danish dictionary and the reported error goes
away.

2) To further compound 1) above - there were no Danish words in the document I
submitted ! OOo was completely setup to expect and use English words and I have
the English dictionary. In such circumstances I might expect the document to be
littered with spelling mistakes and a status line stating that there is a
mismatch. However, going back to point 1) this was indeed an English document
prepared in English by our Danish office.

3) How, as a simple user of OOo could I have told that it was expecting the
Danish dictionary to be present.

4) If I had installed the Danish dictionary what would have happened ? Either
all my English words would have been deemed spelling mistakes ! Or maybe, since
I would now have both dictionaries present there would have been no spelling
mistakes shown, in which case I go back to point 1) !

I realise that a document prepared in one country for digest in another may
present problems but just maybe what the user has setup in their options should
override what is in the document ?

Apparently part of the text was marked with Danish language.
You need to install Danish dictionary (via File - Wizards - Install new
dictionary) in order for Office to check spelling in Danish.
Resolving as invalid.

Confirmed in OpenOffice.org 2.0 Windows XP SP2.
follow-up testing has shown that when applying default formatting to all text
spellchecking is removed for entire document. Comparison of text formatting has
shown that the first three lines(those not being spellchecked)have Danish as
text language(accessed via Format|Character...), whereas remaining text is in UK
English. Dictionary language for spellcheck(Tools|Spellcheck...) is set to UK
English. Probably, all non-English text is being ignored by the spellchecker.

Solution for this case:
1. select text that is not processed by spellchecker
2. call Character dialog via Format|Character...
3. Select English(UK) from Language drop-down list
Note (ABC with checkmark) icon next to a language means that this language is
used by spellchecker
4. Press OK
Now the text should be spellchecked

I imported a Word document and started typing away. Suddenly realised that Auto
Spellcheck wasn't working. Then discovered that it wasn't working in the new
bits I was typing ! In fact all spell checking is disabled. I've reduced the
document down to 5 lines and will attach it.
