I hate to sound like a jerk, but this is one reason open source can be said to
su*k. This issue has been troubling users since 2006, and it's still not fixed.
I am on a new, ultra-high-end brand-name laptop with awesome and ample
hardware.
Installed OOo 3.1.1, turned on smooth scrolling in Writer, and the screen looks
like cr*p. I have seen this with EVERY version of OOo Writer on EVERY computer
I
have owned, including Sony, Dell, Gateway, IBM, Acer, Asus, more. Meanwhile, no
version of MSFT Word has an issue with smooth scrolling. And as a professional
writer, this is a HUGE problem, because I CAN'T READ THE SCREEN. Perhaps worse,
when you disable smooth scrolling, the text jumps horribly at every page break
(another well documented annoyance that has been ignored for years). Sorry for
the attitude and screaming caps, but the lack of attention to such as basic and
fundamental feature is outrageous neglect on the part of whoever is responsible
for this FUNDAMENTAL feature. BTW, I do not see this issue on my Linux
machines,
which means it's "Windows user neglect."

I really think that this issue which can be traced back to OOo 1.0.3 (issue
14988) should have been fixed by now.
Not only is it annoying for the user but seriously detracts from the claim that
Open Office is a reliable replacement for MS Office.
Is it dependent on the video card used? No other program (and I have a lot!)
shows this defect. NVidia GeForce 7600GS, Vista Home Premium

Still apparent on a newer computer with 4GB RAM and running fully patched Vista.
Had to go to "optimal zoom" to see it. Did not occur at 100% zoom.

addendum: I have also noticed general screen corruption in Writer, even with the
smooth scrolling turned off. One of the artefacts is an invisible vertical line
down the screen, at some arbitrary point, whereupon the left and right sides of
the screen are slightly staggered, by less than a millimetre usually. I suspect
this is part and parcel of the buggy graphic memory handling in Writer.

I hate to be picky but I'd like to add that while the corruption has gone, the
"silkiness" of the smooth scrolling has gone too. Now "smooth scrolling" is not
far different to ordinary scrolling, that is, a bit jarring and jumpy. Whatever
they've done to fix the screen refresh problem has also resulted, unfortunately,
in a loss of a sense of sliding, liquid screen.

I suggest this issue should be slated for enhancement down the track.

I would guess that the screen is not being properly refreshed during the little
edgy sliding motions that occur at the end of the PAGEUP or PAGEDOWN actions.
These are the little movements that give the screen the "smooth scrolling"
effect. This is probably a fairly easy thing to fix.

What I have discovered so far is that smooth scrolling UP seems to slower than

I have two newish computers, both still show the screen corruption with today's
build. The machines I have are Dell and Sony laptops, one with a ATI MOBILITY
RADEON X600 (256 MB) and one with a ATI X300 card.

FYI, ATI has about 30% of the market in graphics cards, and since kpalaqin found
the same issue with the other big kahuna in graphics, nVidia, you cannot, in all
good faith, possibly mark this as a "worksforme" error.

I tried with graphics acceleration at all levels, made no difference.

SBA: This problem is very likely to be system-dependant. Thus I do not want to
set it to "Worksforme" just yet.
Believe it or not, we do NOT have a pool of all graphic devices sold on this
planet in our labs :-(

SBA->micawber + kapalagin: Please re-verify your findings in the latest OOo 2.2
RC builds (Or SRC680m201 upwards).
There were "general display issues" fixed (i.e. in CWS aw024) that _MAY_ have
adressed your cases.

Please comment here and tell about your graphic device and your Acceleration
settings.

Incredibly, the topic thread at oooforum.org that covers this issue, and to
which I linked in my first message, has disappeared!

Why was it removed from oooforum?

Why has nobody acknowledged this bug, one that I can easily reproduce on
different computers?

You guys have got to be kidding me! I went to my wife's new Dell notebook,
installed OO 2.1, filled a new Writer document with garbage text (a few pages),
turned on "smooth scrolling", hit the "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys (important)
and instantly saw the bug.

This bug is clearly there on different computers and is easily reproducible.

Please change the status of this to confirmed and assign it for fixing.
