Thank you for your suggestion. Some further investigation indicated that in fact
I was copying the variable along with the number range. Actually, it works
equally well with the variable, but indeed, the user field is suited here.

I cannot get particular sections to hide on a condition. In the attached
document, every section is formatted with Hide With condition Hideflag (The
variable is invisible and located before the number 1). Yet only the first
section hides when setting the variable Hideflag to 1 (located before the 
number 1).

It is difficult to reproduce this issue with a new document. This is an existing
document where it does not work anymore. It used to work in OOo 1.1. I actually
noticed this issue since starting to work with the early OOo 2 version.

In this case, please use User Field, not Variable. Variables hav he property
to be set at different places in the document, means their value is valid in the
document until another Set variable filed appears. From this point on the new
value is valid.
User Fields are have he same value all over the document.
That is a designed differency between these fields.
