OK, now I see where you're coming from. From a theoretical POV you are right. I
have some practically motivated objections though.

I see this issue about inserting a hyperlink with the hyperlink toolbar and all
other cases where the user (or the autocorrection) *explicitly* inserts a
hyperlink and not just only applies a formatting. If the user created a
hyperlink by using "Format Character" I indeed see this as something that is
covered by Issue 72302.

It is completely surprising that inserting a hyperlink changes the formatting of
the text that is entered behind the link. The user will never want to continue
adding text to the hyperlink. Agreed?

This is different to the case where the user changed the formatting for a given
selection. Here we can't predict how the user wants to continue and I don't
believe that switching the formatting off *always* is the better choice.

So if you see these cases to be identical I understand that you opt for never
continuing a formatting that was applied to a selection. I don't say that this
is wrong but I predict that this change isn't so uncontroversary as it is in
case of hyperlinks.

What you also might not know: fixing this problem is not easy - except if we use
the trick with always inserting a blank after the selection/hyperlink that I
already explained. I think nobody will complain against that in case of the
hyperlink insertion but I'm not sure if all users would accept it if selecting
text and applying a formatting to it automatically added a blank behind it.

So IMHO a fix for the general case would take much more time - even if we
already had agreed that this is what we want. The simple fix for the "Insert
hyperlink" can be done fast and so serves our users better, IMHO.

So my choice is to plan for fixing this issue in 2.3. If we agreed that
formattings applied to selections should never continue and if we found a way to
do that in 2.3 I would be fine with declaring the issues duplicate.

And how do you "insert" a hyperlink?
There a at least three different ways to do that in OOo (and all in the end
apply a character format)

* AutoCorrect
* Format|Character → Hyperlink
* Insert|Hyperlink
* Toolbar Button

Other character attributes can be "inserted" using
* AutoCorrect
* Format|Character
* Toolbar Button

I still don't think there's a fundamental or even noteworthy difference.

Insert "foo *bold*" (with autocorrect enabled, or give it a color or a
hyperlink, doesn't matter at all), then place the cursor at the end of bold and
continue typing. What you add is bold/colored/hyperlink/whatever.
I don't think there is a difference in terms of what the user expects.

(note that both the hyperlink and bold autocorrect are smart enough to reset the
format when the user continues typing immediately - before pressing in
that example)

You overlook the difference in user actions: in the other issue the user
deliberately applies a formatting and it's OOo's way to continue this formatting
until the user switches it off again.

In this issue a user *inserts* a hyperlink and does not do anything with
formatting explicitly. So we have two things that are completely different in
the user space.

In the hyperlink case the user will never want that the formatting that was
created by adding a hyperlink will continue. This is different to the other
issue where a user would like to switch off formatting but can't do so.

Both issues are about a character format being continued where the user would
expect the text to return to default formatting.

I really don't see a difference between setting the character-attribute "color"
and setting the character attribute "hyperlink". Both are set by the user.

If you want to hack a "fix" for one aspect only - fine. But I still think this
is the wrong approach.

I disagree that this is a duplicate. This issue is about a special problem
because the change of attributes is an unexpected side effect and so we will
fix it.

Issue 72302 is about a problem that happens by intentional attribute setting and
it needs to be fixed completely different.

closing duplicate.
No matter what solution, it should not only apply to hyperlinks.

To reset the character format, choose Format|Default or press
++ (formelry, you could use to do an "invisible
step" out of the format, but that apparently was too "confusing" and thus
changed to that 3-key combo...)

BTW: the bug does not happen if after inserting the link the cursor is
positioned directly after the inserted link. It only happens if the cursor is
put elsewhere in between.
