We recently had some fixes for similar problems.
Try a current 3.0 (beta) version.

Feel free to reopen if it still happens.

Don't know if this will bump the bug up due to me replying to it but I think I
'solved' it.
Well... the problem went away.

It was due to a large number of fonts on my windows install that were being read
every time I right clicked on normal text but the font option isn't available
when you right click on a spelling mistake that is underlined in red.

I'm not sure why this wasn't an issue in Linux although I did run fc-cache
whenever I install a lot of fonts on it, so I think that this bug is more of an
issue with windows bad handling of fonts, or from requests to generate previews
for all of them at once.

I think it's caused by OO trying to cache or at least read and preview a lot of
fonts when I right click, I can understand some regularly used ones but why
cache all of them?

I haven't installed 2.4 yet but as this problem goes away when I remove the
fonts I think it's a major problem in the first place, more of a feature request
that OO should identify when it's about to try and access too many fonts and not
do so.
Or it should only generate previews of fonts as the font is requested and not to
cache them all every time the list of fonts is called.

The easier solution is when I remove the fonts as I said, but when I am doing
presentation work, the variety of fonts is a nice feature to have to hand.

Feel like I have wasted peoples time over this one as the solution was
relatively simple after spending a short while messing around with everything
that is related to OO, I'm just surprised this is the only program that was
stalled when there was a large number of fonts on my system.

Thanks anyway

Robert

Does it make a difference if you switch AutoSpellCheck off (the ABC icon with
a culy curve in the Standard toolbar)?

I'm experiencing this issue with 2.4 RC1. When I right click in a Writer
document, it takes several seconds for the menu to appear and the soffice
process jumps to 50% of the CPU. This is in Windows XP. It works fine under
2.3.1; I even downgraded again to check, and can verify that. I turned off all
extensions, and even rebooted, loaded OO.o, and tried in a blank document in
2.4; same issue.

First I don't think Java has anything to do with this problem.

How many fonts are installed on your system? Though it shouldn't cause any
problem, it's maybe due to the Fonts submenu?

Please check which external tools are running on your system. Keyboard/Menu
grabber/enhancer may interfer...???

When I right click on a document OO Writer stalls and requires 99% CPU usage for
about 3-5min before returning to normal, however the right click menu doesn't
always appear.
This problem has been present since OO 2.1 and I figure this might have been a
configuration issue on my Windows machine as this DOES NOT occur with my linux
OS.

I presume that this is due to Java appearing slow on my windows system, however
uninstalling Java still results on this behavior happening.

This doesn't happen when I right click on an underlined spelling mistake, and
the menu is displayed with spelling corrections.
Neither does it happen when i right click on images I simply get the formatting
options.
And doesn't seem to occur at all in any other part of the OpenOffice suite.

I hate to file an issue here but I can't seem to be able to reproduce this on
any other machine, (especially not on a linux distro).

To combat this I have tried uninstalling an reinstalling Java, OpenOffice and
removing their registry settings and configuration files a few times with no
success.
I think I could single out this problem if I have missed any configuration
settings (if they are to blame) which may have become corrupt.
I have removed all files associated with Java/OpenOffice from my Application
Data folder and the Program Files folder in windows.

Think I have mentioned everything that may be needed. Sorry to say guys but it
gets to be an irritating problem whenever I right-click on a document and have
to wait 5min or so to get my laptop to respond.

I can provide any files/settings that would help in diagnosing this problem.

PS don't know what to do about the priority field so I left it alone.

Do you have installed OOo for all users or only for you?

If you have it installed for all users, then you can test, whether the user
confiuration is wrong: Add a new user to your system, login as this new user and
use OOo. Does the error occurs here too?

Do you get the same problem, if you open the context menu with the special key
on your Windows-keyboard or if you open the context menu with the shortcut
Shift+F10?

Do you use a real, extern mouse with your notebook or do you use the touchpad?

is the same problem in the other modules too?

Do you have similar problems in other application?

This problem also occurs when using the special key and Shift+F10.
I hoped this might not happen :(

I use a synaptics touchpad with my laptop, however I also have a wireless
optical finger mouse which when used causes the same problem to occur.

This doesn't occur in any other module of the OpenOffice suite.
It doesn't occur in Math, Impress or Calc.

I don't think that this is related to a similar problem I have in OpenOffice
Base. This stalls when I right click on a writer document created from within
the Base using a form.

I am yet to discover another program that has this problem and as far as I am
aware it is only for OpenOffice and only for the Writer module.

I tried just installing the writer module at custom setup and this caused the
same problem to happen so I don't think that anything else is causing this.

I will create a new account now and test the OpenOffice in that account.

A new account on my machine doesn't appear to change anything, I am assuming
that any setting (if it is a setting). Is a global one which is affecting all
users not just myself.

I can't think of anything more to try to get around this problem.

Any further advice would be brilliant, thanks :)

I have no further idea, what can be the cause of the problem :(
Perhaps the developer have an idea where to search.
I get no such problems for OOo221rc2 on WinXP.

A clean install on a systems the same as mine doesn't cause this problem.
OO-2.2-rc2 on XP Pro doesn't cause this problem on other computers, but on my
system it is every time i right click which is an irritant I am sorry to say.
If there is a short list of where all the settings for OO are stored within
windows I will back them up remove them and re-install OOO-2.2rc2.
This should fix the problem if all the things that could interfere with the
Writer module are removed.
