@gleppert: Hi! The new Impress comments do have this functionality, but - from
my personal point-of-view - per accident. As far as I know, no UX guy was
directly involved in the development. In contrast, we (we = Renaissance Team)
currently try reduce the number of toolbar items to clean up OpenOffice.org -
much of the current functionality provided there is rather seldom used or simply
not context relevant. That was the reason to bind functionality related to a
certain function to the object (if possible).

Doesn't have the OpenOffice Impress 3.2 with its new comments features exactly
such wanted Note/Revision toolbar? Isn't it possible to easily reuse the same
toolbar/code in Writer?

That's key pressing, not clicking ;-)
The shortcut is cool for power users, but not very explicit...

Hi! This would be cool, but does not seem to work well. What action should be
bound to the little cross: close a note or delete a note? If we delete it, the
the user may think there is a way to restore the information. It looks like a
little window (which can be restored), but would not behave like one.

We thought about introducing a kind of "trash" icon for the Notes.
Unfortunately, you cannot find one valid representation for all platforms. So we
decided to just use "plain" text and improve the little drop-down menu. Click
(hold), move, release. One click plus movement to delete a Note.

Even Word requires the user most of the time to click twice: context menu,
delete. One click in the toolbar to delete a focused note? Don't forget to set
the cursor inside this note - some (small) additional effort.

I agree that a toolbar may not be the best way. Here are the concerns I see:

- Adding a note requires too much time and clicks (3 clicks and the need to
search for the note entry in the insert menu...): insert>note.
It should be directly possible to do so with only one or two clicks.

- removing a note could be simplified by adding a small cross on the top right
corner of each note could be cool (see the screenshot
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/thunderbird/addon/3093). Currently, you need 2
clicks.

for the color, it was just an idea, but I am not sure for the need of selecting
the color.

@es: I briefly discussed the idea cj some time ago. The goal with the current
implementation is, to integrate it without the need of another toolbar.
Therefore it does not show up in the wiki.

@all: The functionality you requested is handled separately in Writer (revision
functionality, Note functionality). From the user's point of view it is very
similar - I completely agree!

Last week I started a discussion with cj if there is some interest in
integrating Notes and revision functionality. I have no final answer yet (and
unfortunately it is unlikely anytime soon).

If we look at the Notes, there is no need for another (floating) toolbar.
Toolbars are completely separated from the context, the Note, and are often
"lying around" without any good reason :-) Therefore managing the Notes should
take place at the Note itself (e.g. the drop-down menu). You proposed such
contextual actions in issue #87086.

Navigation will be handled with the current functionality available in the
Navigator and the previous/next buttons in the Writer window. This functionality
is already available at a fixed place.

I don't know what issue is solved by selecting the color for the author - today
it is handled automatically. Do you want the same author to get the same color
after re-opening a document? Or do you have anything in mind which I don't
understand? Anyway, as far as I know, the color of the author is handled across
the OOo modules, therefore it does not refer to the current document only.

If we stick with the current functionality there is no need for the toolbar. Do
you agree? Bye!
