A new font was already promised to us since at least 3.0 but for various reasons (legal issues, time, ...) it was always postponed. Finally we are on a good way with it. The odd thing about this issue however is that nobody else could reproduce it and thus the root cause could not properly identified... Still, since the symbol for 'prod' and 'sum' currently are located in the private-use are of Unicode in the StarSymbol/OpenSymbol font, there is a good chance that the problem will vanish once the new font is in use and Math can make use of the new code points. Those boxes toggle if conversion is applied to Word/OpenOffice formulas when they got loaded/saved. If for example you write a Word document and use it's native formula editor and DO NOT check the 'load' check box than after loading that document in OOo they will remain Word formulas. That is if you can edit them it will still be MathType that is used to do so. But only on Windows systems with that type of OLE server. Thus especially on non windows systems that formula would be to-view-only. On the other hand if oyu had checked that box those MathType equations get converted to OOo formulas and you can edit them on any platform later on. I've done some further experimentation.
The check boxes under Tools / Options / Load-Save / Microsoft Office appear to
have no effect.
When I create the MS Equation 3.0 equivalent of prod from i=1 to n {i sup 3},
the equation looks as it should. (The equation created with OOo Math also looks
fine while I'm editing it, but not after I close and return to the MS Word
environment.

Is it the same box with MS Office running? That is the OpenSymbol/STarSymbol font installed there as well? It is the same box (same computer). OpenSymbol does show as one of the installed fonts. 2. When does the formula look odd after importing into MS, before or after you have activated (edited) it? I am creating the equation from within Word by doing Insert / Object / OpenOffice.Org 1.1 Formula. While I'm editing the object, it looks fine. As soon as I close it and return to the Word environment, the font changes to the wrong font. 3. When you were saving the file in OOo what state did the check boxes in Tools/Load Save/Microsoft Office in the line starting with MathType to Starmath... have?
