From your comments, you would rather use a different page style from the working document where the cursor is located, instead of the page style applied in the 'to-be-inserted' document. This is almost guaranteeing that it will 'mess' with the page layout, which is your reason for not applying the page style. Also, if the page style doesn't exist in the working document inserting a document adds it, so why not also apply it? A page style with the same name is more likely not to 'mess' with the layout, then one which has a totally different name, surely.
