I still do not like the idea of using copies of the UNO jars at runtime to connect to a remote URE/OOo installation (there might be technical reasons to use copies of the UNO jars at compile time, though, e.g., within Eclipse). I think a better way to go would be along the lines of publishing a small stub that can be included in applications, finds any necessary UNO jars (even across a network), instantiates a classloader and hands of to the application code proper (i.e., what the Simple Bootstrap mechanism already does, for a local OOo installation). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. IMHO, the point is, that Maven (respectively ibiblio) just is a distribution channel for Java stuff. Java-Uno by its very nature is (not yet) pure Java stuff and may therefor be distributed by Maven. This is comparable to distributing stuff via apt or Java webstart. Ideally all channels would just refer to the origin (OOo), unfortunately this seems not to be easily possible for technical reasons (jar files in the Maven repository need to be pushed, if I understood correctly). Regarding the pipe connection support, as it needs a native library anyway, it may make sense to drop it completely and to pull-in Binary-Uno in case pipe connections are needed. This issue may be seen as an opportunity to separate Java-Uno from Binary-Uno. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. However there are cases where using copies is just necessary: * you're connecting to OOo running on a different machine (using the host parameter in the connection string) * your app is a web app (like the ConverterServlet example in the SDK); in this case all your required JARs must be in your webapp's WEB-INF/lib Needless to say, web app development is very popular these days so especially the latter is something to keep in mind. Making copies is what most people do in practice. If you have a look at the Macros and API forum at oooforum.org you'll notice not everybody likes the new Bootstrap mechanism. (Except oooforum.org today says its DNS service is expired?!?) Back to Maven, it's mostly about managing dependencies in complex Java projects. If your project uses tens of different third-party JARs, and that's fairly common, it becomes a nightware to specify a hard-coded path (that may be different on differnt platforms) for each of them, both at compile time and for deployment. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=71358 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Nov 13 08:21:37 -0800 2006 --- Mnasato, I spend some thoughts on this ... Trying to understand where you are heading, I see that you would like to use Java-Uno (Uno for the Java programming language) independently of the URE or OOo, to connect to a running OOo process. Therefor you need the Java-Uno jars (juh.jar, jurt.jar, ridl.jar (we should have called this one riddle.jar, shouldn't we :-), sandbox.jar is/should not be needed anymore) and the jar file containing OOo API types, unoil.jar. So the Java-Uno jars could be outfactored into their own installation unit (e.g. Java-Uno.rpm or ibiblio), this is more complicated with unoil.jar, as this may change more frequently (may be even incompatible) than Java-Uno and depends on the OOo API. Note that Remote-Uno (currently implemented for Java-Uno and Binary-Uno) depends on detailed knowledge regarding the types getting (un-)marshaled over a connection. E.g. an uno::Any containing an unknown type typically leads to a disconnection. The unoil.jar problem is e.g. solveable by using an own classloader, taking care of unavailable types and loading these via remote Uno. Support for this had been discussed quite often but had not been pressing enough to be implemented. Some points regarding uploading the Java-Uno and OOo jar files to ibilio: - The files need to be updated regularly. - The files need to be versioned. - I don't know yet, how to handle potentially incompatible versions. I suggest that you either implement and maintain the above points, or that you add an entry to the Uno todo list on the wiki (http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Uno/Todo). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=71358 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Nov 13 09:14:32 -0800 2006 --- Kay, yes that's exactly what I do: connect to a running OOo process from Java, but be able to build and distribute my app independently of OOo. Yep sandbox.jar is no longer required since OOo 2.0, I'll remove that one thanks. I'm certainly available for maintaining those 4 jars on ibiblio. Uploading new versions at each OOo release is not a huge effort. This would be useful for other projects as well, there are at least a couple of open source ECM solutions that use them already. Files will be versioned, that's mandatory. Maven also provides ways for declaring dependencies on a particular version, or a range of version. For example, if my app only works with jars version 2.0.x but not 2.1.x I would declare something like dependency groupIdorg.openoffice/groupId artifactIdopenoffice-unoil/artifactId version[2.0,2.1)/version /dependency in my project's maven configuration. This can be used to manage incompatible changes in many cases. I would say it is then the responsibility of each application to ensure that it runs against a compatible OOo version. For my app for example I already recommend OOo = 2.0.3 (because of a bug with headless PDF conversions in 2.0.2). I'll provide you with some Maven XML project description files later to agree with you what values should be used as id, description and so on, as described here http://maven.apache.org/guides/mini/guide-ibiblio-upload.html - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. While it may be useful for some type of applications unfortunately it is not good enough in other cases. My application (http://jooreports.sourceforge.net/?q=jooconverter) for example can run in a servlet environment and using a custom classloader inside an application server would be a nightmare. Additionally it can also connect to an OOo instance running on a different machine. All the app needs to know is on which port (and host if different) OOo is listening for connections; it's easier than using a custom class loader and/or trying to guess the OOo installation path. Back to maven, it is not just about distributing JARs, it is also about simplifying the build process for Java projects as well, especially managing dependencies. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
