ah, sorry Phillip. I didn't mean to leave you in the cold for this long. :-)

We just had a good discussion about this on [EMAIL PROTECTED] list. You can
see the thread here:

http://lists.go-oo.org/pipermail/dev-go-oo.org/2007-December/000190.html

and especially this one

http://lists.go-oo.org/pipermail/dev-go-oo.org/2007-December/000197.html

from Till Kamppeter regarding OpenPrinting.org's recommendation. He basically
says that OpenPrinting consortium recommends that we embed fonts to ensure the
printouts reflect what's on display.

So, I still think that it's best (and probably easiest) to just disable font
substitution globally for all locales. Yes, it will make spooling slower for
everyone, but we would at least ensure correctness over some minor performance
gain (and breakage in some locales). Note that this is not just an issue in the
Hungarian locale but other locales have the same problem based on what I hear.

Ok, if it helps, we can switch of printer font usage per default. people can
enable it via psprint.conf again.

I invited pjanik, he uses this patch in his builds for a long time.
Also we (Hungarian NLC) use it, and we did not find any problem with it.
I agree with Kohei to just disable font substitution globally for all locales.
Also they can use printer configuration utility bundled with OOo.

Hi,

yes, I use this change in psprint directly from the beginning of my work with
OOo:

-PerformFontSubstitution=true
+; PJ: changed to false
+PerformFontSubstitution=false

We have it in because without it, the printing of Czech diacritical marks was
wrong completely.

So two solutions for the second problem come to my mind
- we could enhance psprint.conf to accept language modifiers, so that we could
do something like

PerformFontSubstitution=true
PerformFontSubstitution[cs]=false

- or we could patch psprint.conf to

PerformFontSubstitution=

where an empty string would be handled in the printerinfomanager.cxx with locale
specific code.

However both approaches would tie to the locale, so if a user logged in in C
or en instead of cs he would get the unwanted behaviour again.

Any opinions ?

The first patch replicates the SGENT42.PS PPD which is exactly for people who
want to use Type42 fonts. In the CUPS case the PPD comes (well, is supposed to
come) from the CUPS server anyway, so I'm not sure why you want that patch.

With the second patch effectively you say that a downloaded Times (or Helvetica
or Courier) font is better than the printer builtin font; that seems doubtful,
moreover it will increase the print job size for a pure text doc dramatically.

Ok, I remember that. The accented characters are taken out of a downloaded font
which of course mixes badly with the printer builtin (simply because it is
different). But do we want to make printing worse for everyone for hungarian ? I
think a different solution that perhaps takes the current locale into account
would be in order.

@pl

The second patch comes from the Hungarian community, and they have been applying
that patch to the official release of the Hungarian version of OO.o forever.
Without that patch, some of their accented characters simply don't print right.

@kami_: can you provide a test document for which OO.o fails to print accented
letters correctly without the second patch?

We have two patches that force downloading of fonts to the printer, which
improves the print quality especially on Linux.

The first patch, pushfont-psstream.diff embeds Type42 fonts which greatly
enhances print quality on Linux.

The second patch forces downloading of fonts instead of substituting some type
of fonts with printer resident fonts. Without this patch, printing accented
letters will not work, as reported from the Hungarian community.
