[Alsa-devel] Access of 2 RME Multifaces

2004-04-12 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi,

hope this is the right list to post: I installed to RME Pci Cards with
a Multiface each. Running hdsploader finds and initializes both and
hdspmixer can also get used with both cards using the card select
buttons for card1 and card2. However after startup of jack, I only see
18 alsa_pcm in and out ports instead of 36.

Can someone point me to some infos regarding where and how to
configure that? I guess it has to be done somewhere in alsa, but I
might be wrong...

[Alsa-devel] amd64 anyone?

2004-02-28 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi,

has anyone on this list ALSA, JACK or RME's hdsp running on an AMD 64?
Are there any problems known about the x86 "port" regarding audio?

Thanks. I get snd-hdsp loaded and the firmware uploaded. "cat
/proc/asound/card0/hdsp" looks good. But when I try to run alsamixer i
get

no mixer elems found

This is a freshly installed machine and I fear there are some missing
device links or something. I ran the snddevices script in alsa-driver.
Bear with me if this is stupid and just point me to appropriate
readmes if possible.

[Alsa-devel] still hammerfall-mem on hdsp?

2004-01-16 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi,

hope this list is o.k. for this question:

I try to get the alsa-drivers for the hdsp compiled with alsa-cvs of
today. After successful compile the snd-hammerfall_mem module doesn't
seem to be compiled and thus can't get modprobed. Isn't it needed any
more? I couldn't find any information about that in the docs.

Maybe someone can help with configure options or anything to get the
module compiled (the snd-hammerfall_mem.c file is there but the .o
file is missing) if it is needed or what else to do to get the rme
working.

The docs I found reflect my last knowledge that you need to modprobe
snd-hammerfall_mem and snd-hdsp first and then run hdsploader to
install the firmware.

Thanks,
Orm

Alsa drivers (including MIDI) and all the tools work on my machine:

Acer TravelMate 528TXV, kernel 2.4.22-pre8 (plain, no low-latency),
gcc3.2.3 with a RME PCMCIA and Multiface (both, revision 0x0a and
0x0b).

I didn't check with the PCI cards on my other machines yet. Upon
loading of the firmware occasionally the system freezes. This might be
my mistake (issuing hdsploader a second time for example freezes it,
or changing the Multiface and trying to reload the firmware with
installed module) or due to the unstable kernel. Apart from that
everything works very smoothly :-)

[Alsa-devel] position at sun/paul davis

2003-05-30 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Dear Javier Diaz,

I just learned that Sun rejected the application of Paul Davis for
its job opening in San Jose concerning the architecting of
SunRay(thin client) apparently for not considering him competent and
appropriate.

I'm working in Europe mainly for electronic music studios in the
academic field. It is well known here that Paul Davis is one of the
principal developers in the open source linux audio community. It
seems ironic that one of the motors of linux audio development isn't
even considered for a position in a major company, using software
which is partly based on his free work. In addition not being able to
judge Davis' competence doesn't enhance our trust in the quality of
the products Sun develops.

Be assured, the news about this decision is spread here in Europe and
will have a significant impact on our choice of hardware purchase in
the future.

Please notify the responsible members of your staff.

[Alsa-devel] new rme firmware

2003-02-17 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi,

arecord seems to work with the new revision of the hdsp pci (rev
11). The computer still freezes if pd is used with input
enabled. Günther Geiger, the author of the new alsa port of pd, said
the way he implemented the pd port freezing of computer can only be
related to kernel/alsa problems.

The situation:

- pd works fine in and out with the older revision
- the computer freezes starting pd input enabled with the new revision
- the computer doesn't crash with arecord

The question remains, whether this is due to an incompleted load of
the firmware as the syslogs suggest. I wonder, whether it is even
possible to get arecord and sound out to work when the firmware load
is incomplete or whether this is a bogus message from the driver.

Let me know, if any syslogs or other material is needed to pin down
the problem. If worse comes to worse I'm considering to downgrade the
firmware to revision 10, but I'd rather avoid that for obvious
reasons.

[Alsa-devel] RME, Alsa, Hdsp

2003-02-14 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi,

just a quick note: trying to record using pd (with the new alsa patch
of Günther Geiger) freezes the machine in rotterdam. I'll probably have
to wait 'til monday to have the guys there check whether input with
arecord also freezes the machine. As Günther reported that pd works
well with his (older) rme, we suspect despite the working output
something is still going wrong and the syslog reports of a firmware
download failure might give a clue.

I'll report as soon as I've tested with arecord.

[Alsa-devel] RME installation problems

2003-02-12 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi all,

I'm trying to install a brandnew RME pci/multiface combination on a
Athlon computer with Debian/Woody. I have my own RME/pci combination
at home running well but on the new computer I get complaints on
modprobing the snd-hdsp that no cards are found.

snd-hammerfall-mem insmods without errors (reporting it allocated
memory for 1 card).

Using the older alsa driver which works on my machine at home didn't
help. The card is detected with lspci and uses irq 12 not sharing it
with something else.

I read on other lists that RME uses a different firmware now. Could
that be related to the problem or is the problem clearly related to a
wrong system configuration?

Please answer even if you can't hear those "I can't get ... running"
anymore as it is used in a rather big installation in Rotterdam two
weeks from now.

Let me know if you need any logs to track down the problem.

[Alsa-devel] OSS emulation and pd

2002-12-03 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi,

pd doesn't seem to work with the OSS emulation of the most recent
alsa-cvs. Starting it freezes the machine completely. The OSS
emulation seems to work with xmms on my machine (as far as I know xmms
is using OSS). All pd versions crash the new version and work fine
with the older Alsa.

If somebody needs logs or anything, just let me know.

[Alsa-devel] installing alsa

2002-12-03 Thread Orm Finnendahl
Hi,

I found the snddevices scripts in alsa-drivers. Sorry for
posting. Maybe it's a good idea to include it in an install script?

BTW: Make uninstall in alsa-drivers just removes
/lib/modules/kernel/sound/drivers/snd-*, but doesn't remove the hdsp
and hammerfall-mem modules as they are in another subdirectory.

Hi,

trying to install last CVS of alsa on a new Athlon with Debian

Unloading and reloading of snd-hdsp doesn't help.

[Alsa-devel] [noreply@sourceforge.net: [pcmcia-cs - Multifunction Cards] RE: configuring unsupported sound-card]

2002-09-04 Thread Orm Finnendahl

Hi,

This is a message from Dave Hinds concerning autoconfiguring the
PCMCIA. I looked for pci_register_driver and grep only found it in
the binaries of snd-hdsp. Has the driver been written with the
"modern" kernel API, Dave is referring to?

If the driver uses the "modern" PCI kernel API, with pci_register_driver() etc,
then it should work fine for hot plug devices.

As I said, for this to work, you need to use the kernel PCMCIA subsystem, and
enable CONFIG_HOTPLUG, and get the latest linux-hotplug package.

[Alsa-devel] hdsp.c code

2002-09-03 Thread Orm Finnendahl

Hi,

In the current cvs checkpout of hdsp.c code there seem to be some
leftovers starting line 2874:

<...>
} else {
   hdsp->type = Digiface;
<<< hdsp.c
hdsp->card_name = "RME Hammerfall DSP (Digiface)";
  hdsp->ss_channels = DIGIFACE_SS_CHANNELS;
  hdsp->ds_channels =
DIGIFACE_DS_CHANNELS;
===
>>> 1.10
}

  hdsp_write (hdsp, HDSP_jtagReg, HDSP_S_PROGRAM);

I just got rid of the offending lines and hope that's o.k.

I sent a message to Dave, quoting your mail and giving him your email
address. I think he'll contact either you or me.

Hotplugging support would be great. In that case, contrary to my last
post, pci (and/or pcmcia) hotplugging support obviously has to be enabled
in the kernel config.

Does the snd-hdsp code indeed use any of the hot plug PCI API?

Re: [Alsa-devel] PCMCIA and snd-hdsp

2002-08-29 Thread Orm Finnendahl

Hi all,

I got the RME working again. It even works with the new pcmcia-cs. I
also posted a message on pcmcia-cs in order to get the config file
right (its in /etc/pcmcia/config and I got part of it working, but it
doesn't yet do it all the way; I'll post it if I succeed).

I had to do about 10 kernel compiles until I found the right
combination of modules or compiled-in features. I don't exactly know,
what made it work. Following are the specs of my working kernel-config
file which might be important:

- Support for hot pluggable devices are compiled into the kernel
- pcmcia is compiled into the kernel
- Cardbus Support is compiled into the kernel
- i82365 compatible bridge is compiled into the kernel
- all other options concerning PCMCIA are disabled
- Hotplug support (PCI) is disabled
- Plug and Play support is disabled

After that I recompiled the Alsa-driver and AlsaLib and it worked
right away.

Am Mittwoch, den 28. August 2002 um 14:59:32 Uhr (-0400) schrieb Paul Davis:

I noticed that.

I guess, the best bet is not to use modules at all if pcmcia is
concerned, but compile everything into the kernel (although it ran
with the old card-services on my machine using modules). Also it seems
that the card is not cardbus-compatible and therefore the compatible
bridge is needed.

Thanks to all of you, who helped!!

Re: [Alsa-devel] PCMCIA and snd-hdsp

2002-08-28 Thread Orm Finnendahl

Hi,

Am Mittwoch, den 28. August 2002 um 08:30:21 Uhr (-0400) schrieb Paul Davis:
>
> i don't have the working setup (with pcmcia), but i would obviously

Yes and no. This is what happened:

I compiled a new debian kernel package with a 2.4.19 kernel. My
working kernel was 2.4.18-686 and in addition I had the original
2.4.18-bf2.4 (both available with debian). After I had compiled and
installed the kernel, it didn't work until I had deinstalled and
reinstalled the old 2.4.18-686 kernel and the appropriate pcmcia-cs
and pcmcia-modules. After that, I recompiled the whole ALSA.

Now the snd-hammerfall-mem install o.k. but snd-hdsp segfaults (and I
have to reboot in order to get rid of the module).

I found out that I got a new version of pcmcia-cs (3.2 instead of the
old potato version 3.1.22) and the syslog looks different in that
respect. I'll attach the syslog message with the relevant part. The
Aug 27 8:07 h one is the working one, the other one the failing one. I
even tried to reinstall the old potato pcmcia cardservices but that
seems to be broken with the upgrade of debian to woody. It seems to be
quite a mess and I try to get down to the problem. This is clear:

- pcmcia works fine with other cards with the new setup.

- my built-in soundcard (ali5451) works fine with the fresh compiled ALSA

When I try to get information about the snd-hdsp card (/proc/irq or io
settings), nothing is displayed although snd-hammerfall-mem finds the
inserted card.

I would like to know whether the problem is on the side of the
cardservices (e.g. by not providing the necessary irq and io
information for the hdsp driver) or how the whole mechanism works. I
couldn't find the relvant information anywhere.

Re: [Alsa-devel] HDSP -- linux CardBus issue: PCMCIA driver works!

2002-06-21 Thread Orm Finnendahl

Hi all,

I just wanted to tell you that the PCMCIA card bus interface works
with the hdsp driver and a multiface (I only tested it with aplay and
2 channels so far, but think it should be possible to get the other
channels to play as well). I first had seemingly similar problems to
the ones posted on this list with my SuSE 7.3 distribution, but
changed to Debian this week.

I use the unstable distribution and first had some problems getting
PCMCIA to work. I finally succeeded in the combination of the
kernel-pcmcia-modules-2.4.18-686 and the pcmcia-cs package (It didn't
work with the package pcmcia-modules-2.4.18-686 which gets installed
automatically if you install pcmcia-cs directly, so both packages had
to be purge-removed and then reinstalled with
kernel-pcmcia-modules... first and then the pcmcia-cs package).

I had to remove all references to my built-in soundcard from
/etc/modules.conf (and from /etc/modules as I made an entry there as
well) and just did a modprobe snd-hdsp right after system bootup with
all interfaces connected and powered. The red led flashes and turns
off and alsamixer shows the 18 outchannels of the Multiface (I don't
know how to access the input channels yet).

Anyway, now I'm off trying to get pd to play with it multichannel :-)

>From my side a big thank you to the invaluable work of Paul!
