[Alsa-user] snd-es18xx v0.9.0rc6: Still Having Problems

2003-01-19 Thread Leo L. Schwab
I've spent most of the last couple of days trying to get this to
work the way I want, without success. So, again, I appeal to the list for
help. System particulars appear at the end.

I'm trying to use ALSA on an HP Omnibook 800CT with the snd-es18xx
driver. Although sound samples play intelligibly, the sound quality is not
as good as the kernel-supplied OSS driver ('sb' in this case). There appear
to be three primary problems:
o Straight sample playback using 'aplay' has pops/clicks at regular
  intervals.
o At the very end of a sound sample, 'aplay' will "hiccup",
replaying a previous segment of the sample before exiting.
o Though coming out of both speakers, playback is monaural. It
sounds like left and right channels are being mixed together, and
the result played out both speakers. It also sounds like it's
being low-pass filtered, but I can't verify that.

'xmms' doesn't appear to suffer from the pop/click or "hiccup"
problems, but definitely has the monaural issue. (This is using the ALSA
driver support module for 'xmms'.) All of the above were performed using
native ALSA tools; the OSS compatibility modules were not loaded or used.

I've pored over all the available documentation, and tried fiddling
with everything available in 'alsamixer', to no avail. I can control volume
levels, but I can't obtain stereo separation or make the "muffling" of the
sound go away.

Further, if you enable 'mmap mode' in the ALSA XMMS plugin, a number
of error dialogs pop up reading, "mmap_commit: Unknown error 332". If you
ignore enough of these messages, XMMS will eventually lock up and need to be
killed from a shell. Turning 'mmap mode' off will get rid of the errors,
but XMMS will be more prone to garbled sound when performing other
CPU-intensive tasks.

'aplay -L' outputs a load of gobbledegook I don't understand. I've
also appended it below in case anyone does.

By contrast, the 'sb' kernel/OSS driver plays stereo fine, and does
not pop/click using SOX's 'play' command, but the "hiccup" is still there.
'xmms' playback is flawless in all cases. Here are the options for the 'sb'
module:

options sb irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 io=0x220 mpu_io=0x330

Much of my guidance on configuring sound for the HP Omnibook came
from MobiliX's Web page on the subject:

http://mobilix.org/hp800e.html

Since I have sound working using the old, decrepit OSS drivers, this
isn't a big deal for me, but I'd like to see ALSA working at least as well
as the old stuff. Any and all hints greatly appreciated.

2003-01-19 Thread Neil Levine
Hi,

Installed ALSA on my 2.4.20 Debian box successfully with my Intel8x0
driver (can play MP3s with Xmms or MIDIs with Timidity).

Can also successfully plug in my Evolution MK225c keyboard and see it
generate signals by running "aseqview -s72:0" but dont see my soundcard
with "aconnect -lo"

Rosegarden complains that /dev/sequencer is unavailable...any idea what
I need to do?

[Alsa-user] an opinion

2003-01-19 Thread Stefano Vesa
Dear friends,
I'm the owner of a Terratec EWX 24/96 soundcard.
In my opinion only a Linux guru, a magician, or at best a very lucky
person may get sound from this souncard.
Yes, I'm not so clever and expert but I think that ALSA maintainers
could be more precise and say that enabling this souncard is a matter
for few people.
Bye,
Stefano

Err, what? you just said you had to unmute them for left and right to

returns -1.
I guess I still need to aconnect it to some software (I've been

that the sound system on this motherboard doesn't have some support that
most soundcards do.
However I don't know what or how to connect to this virmidi thing.

[Alsa-user] ALSA and Ensoniq 1371 Sound Under Water

2003-01-19 Thread Bryan Waters
I got ALSA working with my Ensoniq 1371 some time ago. Recently, i've
rebuilt my kernel and install a new video card and new drivers on my
modified RH8 system over a 2 day period. At different times as a rebuilt
the kernel, the sound system was broken and I reinstall ALSA. Once or
twice, I rebuild "ALL" drivers and did a make install which was not
necessarily what I wanted to do...regardless, I eventually got it working
again and forgot about it...although I did break 'gnome-volume-control' as
it complained about keys with bad characters in the gnome configuration
structure. Anyway, i finished the video card install and now my sound
system is broken again...I get sound but it sounds like you might hear it
underwater.

I don't know if the mixer settings are screwed up permanently, or if the
post-install and pre-remove lines in my modules.conf file are saving and
removing bad settings...I did delete the .auxmixrc file but that didn't
help. I've removed the libasound* from /usr/lib and tried removing the
modules using the troubleshooting advice in the HOW-TO but the modules were
in use...(i would have done that part again in single user mode but I didn't
think that was it...) I believe my modules are built correctly.

It sounds exactly like i'm running XMMS with one of those sound effect
plugins for voice removal since I can barely here the voice from an MP3 but
I can hear the music just fine. Although i've checked and none of the
plugins are enabled. Even when i'm not running XMMS playing an MP3, the
same problem occurs with a CD in the CD drive being played with cdplayer.

Please any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

[Alsa-user] Yamaha YMF715 - OPL3-SA3 help!

2003-01-19 Thread Alex Pita
Hello alsa experts,

This email is a repost for my previous email posted on this mailinglist
because i didn't received any reply till now.
Just i own a tecra 8000 lap, with Yamaha YMF715 chipset OPL3-SA3. All is
working fine without one thing: speaker out!
With native kernel drivers, speaker out worked!

I am using alsa-5.12.a drivers. I didn't tryed 9.x version, because,
AFAIK in the 9x version it isn't some improvements for my souncard driver!

Another question:

There is any posibilty to have midi emulation for OSS? I mean something
like that:
alias sound-slot-0-2 snd-midi-oss #/dev/midi

According to ALSA-HOWTO this feature is missing...and this problem
require for some applications to be recompilled with alsa support!

Can anybody tell me how to fix this problems?

Regards,
Alex Pita

Re: [Alsa-user] Cannot get SoundBlaster Platinum Live!Drive's line-inor headphone-out to work

2003-01-19 Thread Georgi Georgiev
Card: Sound Blaster Live!
Chip: TriTech TR28602

Master: this changes the master volume
Master Mono: this doesn't seem to have an effect on anythign, and is muted by
default
Headphone LFE 1: This is 0/0 and muted by default. unmuting it does nothing.
It is not possible to increase it's volume with the up arrow key, as is the
case with all known-good adjustments (that's how I raise master, for example)
Headphone 1 unmuted by default. I can adjust it but it does not seem to effect
anything.
Headphone Center 1 0/0 by default, level cannot be adjust.

On my card, muting these two - Headphone LFE and Headphone Center - happens
to mute my left or right channel of the headphoens, sorry UNmuting them
MUTES the a channel. Right now both of these are muted on my card and
headphones work fine. Try this first. There is also some information on

http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=SBliveMixerControls

but you'd probably find the master page with the links of more use (if you
need more info)

http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=emu10k1

By the way, what is the meaning of the 6 dashes above certain channelsliek
Surround Wave and Music?

If you press space it will select that channel for "capture" i.e. "recording".

I can attach my output of "amixer" if you still have trouble, though mine is
not very good - i still haven't figured how to record from a mic plugged in
the mic in/line 2 on the live drive.

Good luck!
