Indeed, perhaps I was trying to be more clever than I really am, and it
did produce something of a mess. (-:

This is the entire output from /var/log/kernel when I run alsaconf:

I've followed these instructions and nothing comes out of standard
output with arecord (neither timemachine+jack, gnome-sound-recorder, nor
audacity+OSS emulation and portaudio-18.1). I've attached the output of
amixer so you can make sure I have done nothing stupid there.

No idea why you felt this would work. In fact it should produce a mess.

When you have done the alsasound restart, look at
dmesg|tail -20
to see if there are any error messages.

It sounds a lot like you did not turn on the microphone.
Type
alsamixer
The type the Tab key.
On the third line it is the Capture that should now be highlighted. And
there should be one Capture slider. Make sure it is slid up.
Also at the bottom are the Line, CD, Mic,
Use the right arrow key to go to Mic.
and hit the space bar.
The Capture light should now be on the Mic.
Now try using arecord to see if you can get some input. You can must let it
to to the terminal and when you make noise into the microphone do you get
changes in teh patterns of hex digits that are displayed.

If so your microphone is working.

[Alsa-user] linux-2.6.18, alsa-1.0.13, and ALi M5455

2006-10-08 Thread Justin Findlay
I have an ALi M5455 audio controller and I'm running vanilla
linux-2.6.18 on gentoo. Unfortunately this card doesn't work completely
using the snd_intel8x0 driver. The difficulty I'm having is that I
cannot record any sound from a microphone although I can hear the
microphone through the card's output(s). I've also built kernel support
for the snd_ali5451 driver hoping that it would provide better support,
but alsaconf doesn't recognize it. I've even tried

# find /etc/ -type f | xargs sed -i -e "s/intel8x0/ali5451/g"
# modules-update
# /etc/init.d/alsasound restart

which failed.

When will a driver be available for this card? Is there something I can
do to help create one?

Try to revert kernel + ALSA and see whether it was the cause - in
case you updated either kernel or ALSA.

Did you not change anything, or did you update Ubuntu?

If you did update Ubuntu this should be filed in the Ubuntu bug tracker.

[Alsa-user] Problems with Creative SoundBlaster Extigy in Ubuntu (Dapper Drake)

2006-10-08 Thread Stefan Nagy
Hello,

suddenly (for 4 days now) my external soundcard isn't working anymore -
I used it now for more than one year under Ubuntu and I don't know what
to do. I hope somebody can help me.

The soundcard worked out of the box with Ubuntu Dapper Drake and I
didn't change anything... the snd_usb_audio module is loaded,
"cat /proc/asound/cards" says

0 [I82801DBICH4 ]: ICH4 - Intel 82801DB-ICH4
 Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B at 0xa020, irq
10
1 [Extigy ]: USB-Audio - Sound Blaster Extigy
Creative Technology Ltd. Sound Blaster Extigy at
usb-:00:1d.0-2, full speed

In Gnome control-center I can choose the Extigy as preferred sound card
and there is no error message or something... Everything seems fine but
there is no sound at all.

Until now the soundcard was working fine - OK, in the beginning of each
and every sound there was a strange cracking noise... But I got used to
that.

I tested the soundcard in Window$ and there it workes... I suppose my
problem has something to do with some Ubuntu-Update because I didn't do
anything else in the past days.

I would really appreciate your help.

Best regards,
Stefan.

You seem to be using a period size of 256 samples - any change if you
use a larger period size?

Any change if you use setpci to increase LATENCY_TIMER for the SBLive!
card?
