Re: [Alsa-user] No sound on HP dv2000 (dv2058ea) under SUSE 10.1

2006-11-12 Thread Anthony B. Coates (Alsa lists)
OK, here's a follow-up. Note first that I made a mistake when I
originally described my setup, as I had installed a pre-compiled version
of ALSA 1.0.13-0 (from PackMan). I had an off-line discussion with Steve
Sinclair, and he told me that he had found it necessary to set 'model=z71v
position_fix=1 disable_mci=1' to the 'options sound-hda-intel ...' line in
'/etc/modprobe.d/sound' (in non-SUSE distributions, this may be
'/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base').

However, the pre-compiled ALSA 1.0.13-0 didn't support 'disable_mci', so
at Steve's suggestion I downloaded the 1.0.13 sources (alsa-driver,
alsa-lib, alsa-utils, alsa-firmware) and compiled and installed them. I
didn't uninstall the pre-compiled versions first, by the way, as that
would have caused too many package dependency problems.

Result: I have sound from the speakers. However, the built-in microphones
(two, in the lid) aren't working. Also, if I plug in my headset (stereo
with microphone), it doesn't work. The sound continues to come out
through the speakers, and the headset microphone doesn't work (just like
the built-in microphones). I can hear a slight click as I plug-in the
headset, so it's definitely making an electrical connection.

I note that none of the mixer apps are giving me a 'headphone jack sense'
option that I can set. I'm looking into whether 'model=z71v' is actually
the most appropriate one for my audio hardware, which is an HDA Intel card
with a Conexant ID 5074 chip (according to the ALSA Mixer GUI).

So, I have a partial solution, but can anyone suggest what would be a good
next step? Thanks very much in advance for any help,

Cheers, Tony.

Unless you have the exact same codec, this is unlikely to help.

To the OP: Conexant codecs are poorly supported now because the vendor
refuses to release documentation. Reverse engineering is ongoing. Just
wait for new ALSA version.

[Alsa-user] Alsamixer volume won't go to zero

2006-11-12 Thread walt
I'm running Linus's latest git kernel with alsa 1.0.13.
Alsamixer announces that I have Card: VIA 8235 and
Chip: Realtek ALC650E

My problem, which started maybe two or three months ago,
is that the sound is still audible when alsamixer's
volume control is set to zero. I'd estimate that the
sound level is about 5% of maximum when it should be
zero. (I can make the sound disappear with the 'mute'
function, however.)

I'm sorry but I can't remember which update caused the
problem -- I've been hoping that someone would fix the
bug if I just wait long enough ;o)

Anyone have any idea what might be causing this, or
what diagnostic tricks I could use to find out?

Thanks.

 hiho,

i encountered some problems after upgrading to kernel 2.6.19-rc4 vanilla
 from
 kernel org.
sound from the soundcard is very crappy, scratches when basses are played,
 ect.

the problem does still exist on today's 2.6.19-rc5 upgrade.
but it seems that nobody is interested in a solution :/

 hi marcel

..so start working on a solution of the problem. after searching
and reading docu i found out with the kind help of others that after
compiling and loading alsa 1.0.13 into the kernel of 1. debian_etch and
 2. slackware11, a textfile in /etc/modprobe.d of both distros options
 hda-snd-intel index=0 disable_msi=1made the sounddriver worl like a
charm on *both* distros. take this as a start and *dont leave the
solution of your problem(s) to others*.

 hi steef,

that what you gave me is a hint. thanks so far for that. nothing more i
 expected.
at least i just wanted to say that _before_ the rework was done, everything
 was fine.
and at least the guy that reworked the hd stuff, maybe could need this
 information
for finding bugs that relate to his rework.

sounds reasonable.
and, this is a user mailing list, not a developer. if i would like to start
alsa development i would be on the dev list and post patches.
but, even if i do now kernel internals and although i am a member of some
 opensource
projects, i must say, i don't know anything about alsa and hd audio coding at
 all.
i'll see what i may find out, and i will bring up my results on this list.

that 's the spirit!

thanks again for pointing out a possible direction.

you are welcome

 best regards.
 marcel
