The maximum sample size is 32 bits; there is no sample rate limit.

Is there a _very good_ USB stereo interface working
 at 32 bis/192 kHz (or more :) with Debian 6.0 and 5.0 ?

Antelope Audio Zodiac Gold does 384Khz at 32 bits:

Someone had emailed me that its working fine with MPD and Alsa 1.0.24 and no
dmix.

No device is actually using 32 bits, as there is no DAC chip
that is capable of outputting even 24 bits.

Can you elaborate your statement? We're talking digital-to-analog
conversion, right?

ESS Sabre DAC decodes 32 bit
audio:http://www.esstech.com/index.php?p=products_DAC

And a USB Audio Class 2 device that uses said DAC chip:
http://www.usbdacs.com/Products/Products.html

I have an Ayre QB-9 that decodes 24bit audio to 192Khz that is
also a USB Audio Class 2 device.

Looking at their web page (http://www.electrixpro.com/ebox44.html) it seems
as if you need to use drivers for Windows or Mac. Lookis like it's not USB

Re: [Alsa-user] 24-bit support in a USB DAC

2009-05-12 Thread Nick Lidakis

Nice DAC. How does it sound? Are there tubes in that one? Gotta
 love that asynchronous USB mode.

 - Grant

Sounds fanatstic. Yes, it sports one 12Au7 tube; haven't tried any
other tubes beside the Elecro-Harmonix that it came with. Has been
stable as one one could ask for with Linux, MPD, and the Alix server.
The MSRP is very pricey for a NOS DAC. So, I picked it used for song on
Audiogon.

I assume since it doesn't have a native sound device, you're using
the usb-sound alsa module? I can't find it now, so maybe I'm crazy,
but I thought I remember reading a disclaimer not too long ago that
the alsa usb-sound module was unreliable.

Yes, and low power. The Kill-A-Watt meter reads a max of 3 watts when
playing FLAC or MP3's. I have the slim black anodized enclosure
available from PC Engines. Blends in nicely with the rest of the gear
and the black Target rack. Three LED's up front for status; can be
turned off if it suits you. Photos of case:
http://www.pcengines.ch/case1c1blku.htm

The device has no native sound, so yes I am using the usb-sound module.
I have had *zero* reliability problems. Not a single skip, hiss, or
other aberrant sound to complain about. And I should mention that the
Wavelength DAC that I am using is one of the very few running in
Asychronous mode, and I still haven't had any issues.

I've been thinking about getting an external USB DAC or possibly a
cheap soundcard with optical SPDIF to connect to a DAC as suggested
 here[1].

If I knew then what I knew now, I would have checked what input
rates and formats the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 supports. Even now I
can't find any documentation that says what it *does* support!

Anyway, thanks again for the informative post!

 Matt

 [1] http://rednerd.com/2009/02/06/bit-perfect-audio-with-linux-and-mpd/

I would recommend a good external DAC with native USB such as the
Wavelegth's (24 bit DAC's available) or the 24 bit Benchmark DAC-1 USB.
If you're on a budget I would suggest checking Audiogon periodically. I
found my DAC there for less than half the MSRP. Please also look at the
computer section of Head-Fi.org for recommendations on reasonably priced
(and great sounding!!) USB DAC's.

Other people (please do your own research) have commented that S/PDIF on
motherboards doesn't provide proper isolation from digital noise. I have
never used S/PDIF.
