Scratch that, this happened while loading snd-timer, not snd-hda-intel!
  Sorry.

I managed to get around that (either by adding seq-rtctimer-default, or
just by updating and rebuilding), and I can now get sound working again.

But I still have to load the driver, unload, and then load again.

I didn't.

I simply ran

# modprobe snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad

I don't know what modprobe does behind the scenes though...

modprobe is from module-init-tools version 3.2.2

Why did you forcibly load a module (insmod -f)?

[Alsa-user] hda-intel on Thinkpad T60p fails to load with unable to handle kernel paging request

2006-09-26 Thread Eivind Tagseth
Hi

I've been having problems getting sound working before (as seen in issue
2072), but I managed to get around that issue, but doing a
load-unload-load of the modules before using them.

But after upgrading to linux kernel 2.6.18 and updating to the latest
version from the hg repository, I cannot get the module to load at all.

I get the following in my logs:

Sep 26 09:09:10 [kernel] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at
virtual address 07400041

any attempt to use sound will cause the process using it to freeze and
not be killable.

The module is loaded with option model=thinkpad

Relevant output from lspci -v:

System is a IBM Thinkpad T60p (Centrino Duo) running Gentoo with a
vanilla 2.6.18 kernel.

Please let me know if there's any way I can help.
