[Alsa-user] no sound in flash plug in
hi all, i have following problem with my alsa installation: yesterday i upgrade to kernel 2.6.23 and update the alsa-libs, alsa-driver, alsa-tools, alsa-plugins to the latest version. and this was not the first time for me! my soundcard is a hda-intel on a dell xps1210. sound works on the most applications only the flash plug in for my firefox, there is like mute. it's unhelpful to load the OSS-emulation. (yesterday it was also a sdl based game without sound. but today it works(i'm wondering)). anyone a idea? my asound.state, generated by alsaconf: state.Intel { control.1 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type ENUMERATED comment.count 1 iface MIXER name 'Input Source' value 0 } control.2 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type ENUMERATED comment.count 1 iface MIXER name 'Input Source' index 1 value 0 } control.3 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 1 comment.range '0 - 127' iface MIXER name 'Master Playback Volume' value 96 } control.4 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 2 comment.range '0 - 14' iface MIXER name 'Capture Volume' value.0 0 value.1 0 } control.5 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type BOOLEAN comment.count 2 iface MIXER name 'Capture Switch' value.0 false value.1 false } control.6 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 2 comment.range '0 - 2' iface MIXER name 'Mux Capture Volume' value.0 2 value.1 2 } control.7 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 2 comment.range '0 - 14' iface MIXER name 'Capture Volume' index 1 value.0 0 value.1 0 } control.8 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type BOOLEAN comment.count 2 iface MIXER name 'Capture Switch' index 1 value.0 true value.1 true } control.9 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 2 comment.range '0 - 4' iface MIXER name 'Mux Capture Volume' index 1 value.0 4 value.1 4 } control.10 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 2 comment.range '0 - 127' iface MIXER name 'Front Playback Volume' value.0 111 value.1 111 } control.11 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type BOOLEAN comment.count 2 iface MIXER name 'Front Playback Switch' value.0 true value.1 true } control.12 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 2 comment.range '0 - 127' iface MIXER name 'Surround Playback Volume' value.0 111 value.1 111 } control.13 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type BOOLEAN comment.count 2 iface MIXER name 'Surround Playback Switch' value.0 true value.1 true } control.14 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.count 1 comment.range '0 - 127' iface MIXER name 'Center Playback Volume' value 113 } control.15 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type BOOLEAN comment.count 1 iface MIXER name 'Center Playback Switch' value true } control.16 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type INTEGER comment.co

In case you didn't know, the old OSS interface only allows one and only one application (at once) to use audio... if you have one app running and try to run another one, the latter will not be able to use audio. Perhaps you are using a desktop environment like KDE or Gnome and have some sound server (artsd, esd, jackd, ...) and/or some other program running which opens /dev/dsp and keeps it busy? Unfortunately, there are still several programs (in particular some non-free/commercial ones) which either only knows about the old OSS interface or still use it by default. :-( If you are using a sound server, make sure to configure it properly to use the ALSA interface (and not the old OSS one). Personally, I use KDE and (since ALSA eventually became the default) I prefer to keep ARTS disabled and rather instruct all applications to directly use the ALSA interface. This has a few side effects, but for me those are rather minor, so I don't care. YMMV. If you happen to have some apps which still only know about the old OSS interface, make sure you run only one of them at once. If you use some sound server (again artsd, esd, jackd, etc.) you may try to use a "wrapper" (such as artsdsp) to run the OSS-only app, but I have to say that my experience with them was not that satisfactory. Again, YMMV. About SDL, AFAIK now it has an ALSA audio plugin, though it may or may not be installed. Make sure it is. (...and, if they're installed, also remove the audio plugins that you don't need, such as the OSS one). Hope it helps. This is almost certainly not the problem you are experiencing but might be of help to someone else. If you are on an x86_64 system and are using the 64 bit apps and libraries then you will need to run the flash plugin using the firefox nspluginwrapper plugin as there is no 64 bit flash plugin. In order to get sound from this you will also need to have the 32 alsa libraries available (most linux distributions will let you install both.) The drawback with this is that it will almost certainly interfere with any 64 bit apps that might want to use audio as well. /J\ - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges.
