[Alsa-user] Wonders with alsa

2008-08-05 Thread Yury Aliaev
Hello,

Recently I'vet some alsa quirks. First, after the computer upgrade I've
found that the sound card (Crystal 4281) and SCSI host adapter share the
same IRQ. I've tried to fix this and move SCSI into another PCI slot
(and haven't touched the soundcard). The devices appeared at the
different IRQ's but the sound has become distorted like it would be
overdriven, but the loudness have been normal and the mixer settings
haven't affected this distortion. When I've moved the soundcard back the
distortions have disappeared.

Another issue: when I start mplayer with -ao alsa, then pause it and
then resume, the playback doesn't resume. This doesn't appear with -ao
oss. Xine, when paused and resumed, starts playback without sound, put
pressing 'escape' twice returns the sound.

Kernel 2.6.25 (patched, from ALT Linux Sisyphus repository), alsa 1.0.16

WBR,
Yury.

mmh... well, if it is some bug introduced with some kernel security fix,
as a possible workaround you may try to use the new 2.6.24 "etchnhalf"
kernel introduced with the latest Etch "dot" release.

(you'll also get a newer ALSA and a great many new features with it as
an extra bonus... :-)

Ciao,
Paolo.

[Alsa-user] Record audio with Philips SPC520NC webcam

2008-08-05 Thread Artem Makhutov
Hi,

I have a Philips SPC520NC webcam, which works fine with the linux UVC driver.

The only problem I have is to record audio using the build in
microphone. (Under Windows the microphone works well.)

I am using kernel 2.6.26 and the build in snd_usb_audio and alsa version 1.0.17.

After arround 5 seconds I am getting an "read error: I/O Error" message, and I
am getting an empty wav file (only the wav header is in there).

I have attached an lsusb -v output.

Do you need more debug output?
Any suggestion?

Changing the sample rate does not make any difference.

Thanks, Artem

Sometimes things get screwed up big, I remember my transition from Mandriva
10.0 to 10.1 (IIRV the versions) - sound-wise
it was horrible, had to revert, Lee Revell acknowledge that realtime
functionality was screwed up.

Newer is not always better.

Regards,
  Sergei.

[Alsa-user] dmixer

2008-08-05 Thread Stevens, Peter
For alsa-lib-1.0.17rc2 the dmix plug-in is enabled by default (for the
default "stereo" device). Would anybody know which setting I must
override in /etc/asound.conf file to enable dmix for the surround51
device (among others)? I wish to be able to open any of the : stereo,
surround40, or surround50 devices at the same time and have their
outputs mixed automatically. I was able make this happen by creating my
own alsa devices, but I assume there is a cleaner way to do this (via
overriding an existing setting)?
