Yup, it's actually recorded at 10 times the rate of telemetry (100
samples/sec during ascent, 10 samples/sec during descent).

I'm afraid I always assume my rocket is about to destroy itself when I
put it on the rail :-)

Yup, having your tracking and recovery system something that you can use
while traveling to the landing site is awesome. APRS adds another option
to our existing hand-held TeleBT/Android system, so now you get to
choose which to use!

Some telemetry frames in "our" modulation and coding scheme are always
sent, but with APRS turned on so much of the available transmit time is
consumed that you'll see many fewer such frames in the downlink than
when APRS is turned off.

Yes.

If you have such a setup, I'm sure being able to use it for rockets too
is great. That's why Keith got APRS working .. lots of folks have asked
for it, and the new radio chip we're using can actually do it. But
personally, ever since we got TeleBT working, I just can't imagine using
anything else... ;-)

If the device is switched into APRS mode do I understand correctly that the
the "voluminous" telemetry data is no longer available for real time monitoring?

That said, I suspect all the flight data is stored on the device for download
after recovery anyways?

I believe that real time monitoring and recording of data is really only
necessary
if one thinks their project will be lost or go up in an airborne
conflagaration.

APRS can't handle high data rates but if one expects to find and recover the
rocket
anyways, the loss of high rate monitoring shouldn't be that big of a deal. It
can be
downloaded later.

One can't beat a solution comparable to a D72,VX-8GR or FT1DR plugged into a
compatible
handheld mapping GPS for navigating to the rocket. Very portable and
recommended. I hope Garmin doesn't stop making at least one GPS with a serial
plug NMEA capable input/output. The simple Legend, 60Cs,CsX and 76Cs all went
out of production. The only current Garmin GPS with the serial port is the 78
series. A 78 is running about $180 to $200 which isn't too bad.

Thanks! I've had an enormous amount of fun coding that up
 and figuring
out how to make it as useful as possible. The APRS stuff
 reports
lat/lon/alt and then sticks satellite stats and voltages in
 the
'comment' field so you actually get lots of status info from
 the rocket
 on the rail.

Regular Altus Metrum telemetry will always offer more data
 as it has 16
times more bandwidth, and longer range as it uses a more
 sensible
modulation scheme and forward error correction, but the
 convenience of
APRS in your pocket makes it pretty cool.
