Re: [Amanda-users] 'Idiots Guide' for configuring Amanda on Linux?

Hi,

dceola schrieb:

I'm new to these forums, and am also new to Amanda, and still trying

 to learn my way around Linux (i'm using Fedora 7).

Nothing important for your problem, but if you are new to Linux, I guess you
like the easy way to keep your system secure and up to date. Maybe think about
a newer distribution. The support for F7 ended in June 2008. Current is F9 and
F10 should be released at the end of november. If you need a long term support
OS, you can use Centos (based on RHEL/Fedora). Each centos release is
maintained 7 years.

Unfortunately, i've got to a point where i'm both confused of what

 i'm doing and unsure of what i should make changes to,
 for my system as compared to what is outlined in that guide.
 (for what it's worth, i made it about halfway through that guide)

What exactly is confusing you?

 If anyone could point me to a how-to guide for setting
 amanda up on linux, with a single scsi tape drive, which
 will be changed manually, i would be very grateful!

The wiki is a good guide to start with:

[Amanda-users] 'Idiots Guide' for configuring Amanda on Linux?

2008-10-21 Thread dceola

Thanks for the response!

I went with F7 as i had someone experienced with it assisting me in setting up
my server, and at this point i have enough stuff on this server that it
wouldn't be very easy to change to a different OS.

With regards to the specific 'how to' guide i posted a link to that i had been
using, i made it through that guide up to the point of editing the changer.conf
file and commenting out 4 specific lines in the /usr/lib/amanda/chg-zd-mtx
file. I believe my confusion lies in trying to figure out what is done in that
guide that is specific to using a tape changer, instead of a single tape drive.
I could probably make my way through it all, but it's been a lot for me to wrap
my head around, and decided to look for a guide thats a bit closer to my
situation.

You don't need to specify changerdev, changerfile or tpchanger, if you just
want to store your backup with a single drive on one tape. Just set tapedev to
the non rewinding device.

Also you can have a look at
http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Amanda_chapter_in_Backup_and_Recovery
This is a chapter out of the O'Reilly Book Backup Recovery.

If I understand the issue...

I add the amanda entries to /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf,
then when I hup inetd and check the system messages file, /var/adm/messages
I see that I need to run, er, # inetdconv (?). So you do that, then
you should see that amanda is available in output from # svcs and
# svcadm.

LTO-4 tapetype and blocksize

2008-10-21 Thread Jean-Francois Malouin

Hi,

Just got a new HP LTO-4 tape drive and I've done some testing
to get a tapetype entry for it and I don't see much of a difference
between the default (32k) and higher values like 512k, 1024k and
2048k (see below). What are your experiences wrt to a specific choice
of a blocksize for such a drive?

Also: I have LTO-3 tapes written with a blocksize of 32k:
will I be able to extract data from them using a different blocksize?

./amtapetype -e 800G -f /dev/nst0
define tapetype unknown-tapetype {
comment just produced by tapetype prog (hardware compression off)
length 772096 mbytes
filemark 0 kbytes
speed 95148 kps
}

./amtapetype -o -e 800G -b 512k -f /dev/nst0
define tapetype unknown-tapetype {
comment just produced by tapetype prog (hardware compression on)
length 772096 mbytes
filemark 0 kbytes
speed 101807 kps
}

./amtapetype -o -e 800G -b 1024k -f /dev/nst0
define tapetype unknown-tapetype {
comment just produced by tapetype prog (hardware compression on)
length 772096 mbytes
filemark 0 kbytes

I had that problem also, not the linking but when it came time
to run # amcheck.

I resolved it by recompiling, with an additional ./configure option.

I tested an LTO-3 drive using tar back in the day, and the speed increased

From 'man amrestore':

OPTIONS
   -b Set the blocksize used to read the tape or holding file. All
  holding files must be read with a blocksize of 32 KBytes. Amre-
  store should normally be able to determine the blocksize for
  tapes on its own and not need this parameter.
