I'm looking for a clue for troubleshooting a new
amandaclient install. My main problem is
that this hasn't been worked on in about 5 years...

I have a dozen clients, including two ubuntu GNU/Linux,
and we are trying to add one more.
This one happens to be Ubuntu/Linux on VMWARE.
I can ssh into the new server without password.

Is there a way to confirm that amanda is running as the correct
user on the new client? Also, I was unable to locate the
dumptypes file. I suspect that's where noop is referenced.

The error is below - and I found the same text in the amandad log
on the client.

Thanks
Seth

Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check

ERROR: NAK jirahost: user root from eair2.montefiore.org is not allowed
to execute the service noop: Please add amdump to the line in
/var/backups/.amandahosts on the client

Have you tried what it suggest? Read the amanda man page to know the
format of the .amandahosts file.

It need: eair2.montefiore.org root amdump

Why are you running amcheck as root? It is highly recommended to user a
different user for security reason.

Amanda-2.6.1b1 is on that page. We'll be releasing another beta once
we hear back from more testers.

I should probably send an email to the platform experts. We are in
need of Linux Platform Experts, too -- any volunteers?

The only thing I've noted here Dustin was amflush loses it and sends empty
messages to the printer from amreporter if there is a *.tmp file left
in /dumps from a machine crash, but no other files to flush. It also sends
an email of the usual length but all results are missing. This occurred here
when I was playing with mtools and locked the box completely, forcing a reset
button reboot.

That was while I was running my 'catchup' script which runs several backups
and flushes in a row to get amanda restarted after a long hiatus due to a
failed boot drive here that forced a re-install.

I *think* everything else is working, but will find out tonight as this will
be the first run via cron in about 50 minutes.

Comment: The presence of a .tmp file in the holding disk when amdump is
started is prima-faci evidence of a crashed dump or a machine reset. It is
not in the database, so if found at the startup, it should just be deleted,
it is of zero value anyway.

Call this a feature request please.

Gene, thanks so much for testing!

I'll see what I can do about the crash.

Basically, be willing to install beta versions of Amanda (not in
production) and run them through their paces, and work out any kinks
along the way. In detail, this means building from source, possibly
after applying a patch or two, running the installchecks, and then
running some test dumps and recoveries.

For platforms we-the-developers are less familiar with, some
platform-specific wisdom is also helpful. For example, Scott Bender
helped test the last release on HP/UX, and his experience with
building other applications on that platform was invaluable. Such
experts are also the people I look to for help when someone posts
platform-specific questions to the list.

The crash wasn't amanda! It was mtools, which apparently have no timeouts
when a floppy access dead ends in the manure pile. Locked up the whole
machine, totally.

So don't go beating on amanda because the old girl misbehaved. Just make her
to the housekeeping needed to clean up the mess is all I'm requesting.

I am just wondering if there was a real use for the barcodes, i.e. setting

amcheck isn't really in the business of trusting things, so I'm not
sure I'd like that. Amanda does use the barcodes to load a tape
directly, rather than cycling through the changer until it finds the
desired tape.
