RE: Zmanda acquired from Carbonite by BETSOL -- future of Amanda development?

2018-09-26 Thread Ashwin Krishna
My apologies for not being able to respond to your mails sooner. BETSOL is very
proud of Zmanda's open source heritage and community.
We are 100% committed to the open source community and will be contributing to
the code base to the best of our abilities.

I understand that we were not able to contribute as per the expectations in the
last couple of months.
I want to assure you that we are actively investing in growing Amanda and we
have young enthusiastic engineers in the team.
You can expect the next Amanda releases to include support for newer versions
of operating systems, defect fixes, security enhancements etc.

We have retained the team members that we could of previous Zmanda team.
I can tell you that it's not easy without support from the community members.
We encourage the community members to guide and contribute as much as you can.
If you need commit access to the code base, please don't hesitate to reach out
to us.
You can expect our commitment and support to you.

Thanks and Regards,
Ashwin Krishna

As a long time user of Amanda (not 20 years, only 18 :) I would be gutted to
see it die too.

Though I am not sure I can do much to contribute.

Thank you,

Is there some one organization among the long-term users of amanda
that would be a natural choice as keeper of a community fork?
Should a dedicated organization be created for the purpose?

Does anyone know what became of Jean-Louis Martineau in the sale
to BETSOL, or whether he still has interest and time for the project?

I would be happy to contribute to a forked community amanda (or
whatever it might be called, if "amanda" trademark rights are in
question). I still have a batch of contributions I was working with
Jean-Louis to get pushed a year or so ago, but it seems we both got
pulled onto other things.

However, I don't have the bandwidth available to be a maintainer
of a fork

Thats fine Jean-Louis. But I don't feel I have the mental talent left to
do that w/o inadvertently screwing things up, I'd much rather go back to
playing the canary in the coal mine like I did years ago. But I've had a
usually fatal pulmonary embolism since those days, and now find I have
an iron or 2 too many in the fire already. Expected, I'll be 84 late
next week.

You might be one candidate Stefan, I know you've contributed to this list
from time to time. I've never been on the hackers list, so I'm not
familiar with who's there and their qualifications. I just sent a
subscribe msg to it.

Don't fork.

I can give write access to the SVN repository to people that ask for.

I am interested. Also a user of Amanda for a long time.

+1 to forking.

forking: ok, good

but who knows the code and is able to maintain and develop ... ?

maybe the amanda-hackers list has some candidates?

I got worried when Carbonite took over Zmanda, effectively throwing
amanda under the bus. Amanda development slowed way down then.
I just took a look at BETSOL. I think its time to fork. Run by an MBA,
they will never commit the talent and manpower to keep it updated in the
face of continued tar development.

Fork it if someone has a long term interest in seeing a good, long term
backup solution keep sucking air regularly.

Said by a 20 year user of amanda.

FWIW the Zmanda wiki hasn't had any substantive updates since January,
but notes that as of August Ashwin Krishna is a Zmanda developer and
the "maintainer of open source amanda code at sourceforge".

I recently noticed that there haven't been any commits to the master
Amanda repository (i.e. Sourceforge/Github) since February -- which made
me wonder what's in the works for Amanda development going forward

A quick bit of browsing on the Zmanda and BETSOL websites doesn't turn
up anything more recent that the acquisition announcement in May.

Is anyone out there on these lists able to provide any news?

Thanks.

Nathan
