You can increase runtapes, ...

maxdumpsize is not set in my amanda.conf

> ... or set maxdumpsize if you want to allow amanda to

do more backup than the tape space (useful with a lot of holdingdisk).

But e.g. last month, amanda (3.3.0) filled 5 tapes (runtapes was set to 5) and
put the rest into the holdingdisk, so I could flush it later:

>> These dumps were to tapes KAS076, KAS047, KAS051, KAS052, KAS050.
>> Not using all tapes because 5 tapes filled; runtapes=5 does not allow
>> additional tapes.
>> There are 186067M of dumps left in the holding disk.
>> Run amflush to flush them to tape.

Amanda dumped all with level 0 and what could not put to tape, was left in the
holdingdisk.

"dumpcycle" just appears once in my amanda.conf (global, not in a dumptype

Dumpcycle 0 doesn't do just full backups of DLEs

2011-09-04 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hi,

we have one set with "dumpcycle 0" for monthly off-site backups that was
running fine for a long time.

Last weekend it was the first time, that amanda (3.3.0) decided not to do
level-0-only for this set.

Many DLEs were just dumped in level 1:
> planner: nucleus.mr.lfmg.de /BACKUP 20110903210001 0 "[dumps too big, 1320
KB, full dump delayed]"
> planner: genome.mr.lfmg.de /BACKUP 20110903210001 0 "[dumps too big, 2916
KB, full dump delayed]"

There were enough usable tapes in the library (and if not, amanda left the
rest in the holdingdisk in the past). Also the holdingdisk is having 2TB free
space (what is enough to hold almost the whole backup).

Any idea what could be wrong and how can I really force amanda to do only
level-0 ("dumpcycle 0" doesn't seem to be enough).

Regards,
Marc

Not yet.

At the moment I have to downgrade to an old version for every restore. But

Can a parameter be added to the smbclient command?

2011-08-14 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hi,

is it possible to tell amanda to add the "-p 139" option to smbclient when
doing a backup of windows shares?

Samba 3.6.0 has a bug, that breaks smbclient when using it on Windows NT4
shares:

# /usr/bin/smbclient //molek-04/lightcycler -U administrator
protocol negotiation failed: NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT

If you add the "-p 139" to smbclient, it works.

Can I tell amanda direclty do add this parameter or do I have to write a
wrapper?

Marc

Why does Amanda not use my new labled tapes?

2011-07-27 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hi,

I increased my vTape pool during the last days, but amanda is still only
writing to the old tapes that were already in use and not to the new ones.

If I change the tapelist entry from

to an old date

the vTape is used in the next run.

I found a similar bug in an earlier version last april, where Jean-Louis wrote

Currently I'm using Amanda 3.3.0 (selfcompiled) on Scientific Linux 6 (x86_64).

I temporarily downgraded the server to 3.2.2 - then the problem is gone (with

Bug in 3.2.2: No acceptable volumes found for new labled tapes

2011-04-03 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hi,

I'm running amanda 3.2.2 and encountered the following problem:

I want to flush the holdingdisk content to a new labled tape, but amanda
always reports "No acceptable volumes found" - but a new labled tape is in the
changer!

$ amadmin KAS tape
The next Amanda run should go onto tape KAS019 or a new tape.
.
The next 2 new tapes already labelled are: KAS016, KAS071

The changer is having a new labled tape:
$ mtx status | grep KAS016
  Storage Element 3:Full :VolumeTag=KAS016

I found out when I switch the tapelist entry from
   0 KAS016 reuse BARCODE:KAS016
to the style of an used tape, just with an very old date
   200101010 KAS016 reuse
the tape is found and used.

I used a paste service for the taper.*.debug (because the list doesn't allow
me to attach files): http://www.onlyfree.de/php/pasteservice/show.php?id=21607

Hello,

how can I make 'amadmin find' just to show the disk I have told and not all

# amadmin KDD find genome /shares

shows me the entries for

/shares
/shares/Abteilungen
/shares/Abteilungen/Immungenetik
/shares/Abteilungen/Molekulargenetik
... and 12 more

All in all this command produces 2112 lines, from which are only 26 are really

Backup the same data to two vTapes

2010-12-30 Thread Marc Muehlfeld
Hello,

currently I backup to a storage system and copy it to a second one to
ensure, that if it breaks, I still have my vTapes on the second one.

Is it possible to configure Amanda to write backuped data to two
vTape-"Libraries" at the same time (the same data to two vTapes)?

Or does anybody have a better idea not to loose all backups if the storage
breaks down.

Re: How do send dumped DLEs to tape earlier?

2010-12-14 Thread Marc Muehlfeld
First I thought, amanda would collect n% of my tape space (66 GB here for my
vtape) before writing to tape. But at the moment I have 415 GB "wait for
writing" and the taper is idle:

...
dumping : 2122758m 9958m (1232.72%) ( 29.69%)
dumped : 119 1227826m403578m (304.23%) (296.96%)
wait for writing: 3415386m 15947m (2604.70%) (100.46%)
...
writing to tape : 0 0m 0m ( 0.00%) ( 0.00%)
...
8 dumpers idle : no-dumpers
taper status: Idle

Im not really sure, when amanda decides to put dumped data to tape. Maybe
someone has a hint for me.

> Not certain I understand the question(s).

What I mean:

When amanda is working here, first a lot of the DLEs that have been dumped
are put on the holding disk first, while amanda is dumping other DLEs.
Later amanda is putting them to tape. Why not earlier?

In my amstatus output you can see, that 95 of 121 DLEs had already been
dumped. 1 of the 95 was allready put to tape. The other 94 DLEs are still
in the holdingdisk at the time I grabbed this output. Later they are all
send to tape.

And what I want is, that amanda put DLEs to tape, when the dump to the
holdingdisk is finished. Currently this waste time, because many DLEs are
collected at the holding disk and and the taper is idle. The whole backup
could be finished earlier, if this delay wouldn't be there.

When I directly dump to tape, only one DLE can be backuped at the same time.

Marc

IGNORE just ignores the output for the report and prevents making the state
"STRANGE". Everything that could be backuped, is on tape. But what couldn't
because of any reason that isn't on tape and can't, of course, not be
restored. But the same is if you exclude something. How you want to restore
anything that isn't on tape (because it was excluded)?

Unfortunately I use Debian Lenny and it still uses 2.5.2, so I can't define my
own applications.

Compile it by yourself or use a rpm, or deb in your case, for installation. As
I remember, in older versions you can just put all on the exclude list.

Hi,

I'm running Amanda 3.2.0 and I want on some clients to backup two DLEs at
the same time. Currently I have globally configured "maxdumps=1". But how
do I set up "maxdumps=2" for just some hosts of a set?

I created a new dumptype with "maxdumps=2" and changed all DLE entries of
one hosts to the new dumptype. But on that host still one backup run at
the same time.

But even if I set the global option "maxdumps=2", only one DLE is backuped
at the same time.

Can't use newly labled tapes when timestamp is 0 in tapelist

2010-11-09 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hello,

I discovered this problem the first time in 3.1.1 and it's still in 3.2.0:

When I label a tape, the 'tapelist' file contains e. g.
   0 KAS056 reuse
But amdump/amflush doesn't accept this tape:

> *** A TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No acceptable volumes found].
> There are 209562M of dumps left in the holding disk.
> Run amflush to flush them to tape.

If I change the 0 in the 'tapelist' to an old timestamp, like
   2001010100 KAS056 reuse
it's no problem and everything is fine.

Maybe a regex problem?

since switching the server from 2.6.1p2 to 3.1.1 and then to 3.2.0, every

successfully retried. Sample:

  storage-01.mr.lfmg.de /tmp lev 0 was successfully retried

Switching the server back to 2.6.1p2 and the message is gone. Going to 3.1.1

We have about 20 clients with version between 2.5.0 and 3.2.0.

I applied the patch to the client and server. Now recovery is possible if both

But the problem with the umlauts is still there: I can't recover files with
german umlauts, only if I use wildcards. Also they are not shown in amrecover:

amrecover> ls

You fixed this in 2.5.1p2

in 3.1.1 and is still there in 3.2.0.

Hi Jean-Louis,

thanks for the patch. I applied it to the client and server (both 3.2.0) and
tried a restore a file without umlauts on the client:

...
Continue [?/Y/n]? y

amrecover: bad header
Extractor child exited with status 1

I attached all logfiles that were created for that try (2 from the server, 1
from the client)

bsdtcp allows recovering files with and without umlauts (without just when
using wildcards as workaround).

It has nothing to do with umlauts.

I suspect a bug in the handling of the bsd auth in amrecover.
Can you try the bsdtcp auth?
You need to setup an inetd/xinetd entry on the server and run amrecover with
'-oauth=bsdtcp'

Re: 3.2.0: Bug with German umlauts

2010-10-22 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

It's getting more and more strange:

Restore of a file with umlaut totally fails if you try to restore over network
(client and server are both 3.2.0). It's even impossible to use wildcards:

# amrecover TestSet -s nucleus -t nucleus
AMRECOVER Version 3.2.0. Contacting server on nucleus ...
...
amrecover> ls
...
2010-10-22-09-32-21 "M\\303\\266gliche Zusatzkosten f\\303\\274r QM-Projekt.odt"
amrecover> add M*
Added file "/M\\303\\266gliche Zusatzkosten f\\303\\274r QM-Projekt.odt"
amrecover> extract
...
Extracting files using tape drive HDD_Test_Changer on host nucleus.
Load tape TestSet002 now
Continue [?/Y/n/s/d]? y
/bin/tar: This does not look like a tar archive
/bin/tar: Skipping to next header
/bin/tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
/bin/tar: Read 7944 bytes from -
/bin/tar: ./M\303\266gliche Zusatzkosten f\303\274r QM-Projekt.odt: Not found
in archive

/bin/tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

If I downgrade the client to 2.6.1p2, I can restore files when using wildcards
from an 3.2.0 server. But the usage of wildcards is still necessary.

Marc

On each client you want to monitor via check_mk, you have to install the
check_mk agent that is executed via (x)inetd.

http://mathias-kettner.de/checkmk_getting_started.html

If i got all well , /etc/check_mk is in the nagios monitoring server ?
But now if i go to my server i don't have the /etc/check_mk folder to
create the mrpe.cfg, where do i create my mrpe.cfg file in the
myserverip ?

On the nagios host, where you installed check_mk, you have /etc/check_mk (were
main.mk and others files are located). If you run checks on the nagios host
via MRPE, you have just to create the mrpe.cfg file. On clients that have just
the check_mk agent, you have to create this folder and the mrpe.cfg file by
yourself.

Thre is an asterisk plugin already on myserverip ,i wanted to use that
one, is there any easier to monitor Asterisk using check_mk ?

Depending on the plugin you have, you have to decite from where it has to be
executed. If it's a plugin that checks something local (like processes,
existence of files,...) you have to put it on the client.

If it's something that does a remote check (like checking if a port is open or
a webpage can be reached,...) the plugin is executed from the nagios host,
because you want to check if the service is available over network. Of course
you can execute remote checks on other hosts too (e. g. if you want to check
if a MySQL login is possible from host A to host B, you put the plugin to Host
A and execute it via MRPE).

For other asterisk plugins see nagios plugin pages like
http://nagiosplugins.org/

Marc

3.2.0: add command in amrecover fails on trailing slash of directory names

2010-10-22 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hello,

I did testings with 3.2.0 and discovered a problem in amrecover. In previous
versions, I copy/pasted directory names to the 'add' command. This fails now,
because 'add' doesn't accept the '/' at the end any more. If I type it
without, it works.:

amrecover> ls
2010-10-21-21-00-02 "test/"

amrecover> add "test/"
File "test/" doesn't exist in directory
amrecover> add "test"
Added dir "/test/" at date 2010-10-16-21-00-02

The 'cd' command still allows the slash at the end like privious version.

Marc

3.2.0: Bug with German umlauts

2010-10-22 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hello,

I reported this problem for 2.5.1p2 and it was fixed by Jean-Louis. It came
back in 3.1.1, where I got a patch from Dustin which fixed it for restoring on
the server, but not when restoring on the client. But he said it was to late
to add the patch to 3.1.2. Today I upgraded to 3.2.0 and it's still broken.

amrecover shows files with umlauts:

2010-10-22-09-32-21 "M\\303\\266gliche Zusatzkosten f\\303\\274r QM-Projekt.odt"

The only way to recover is adding the file with wildcards (like 'add
M*gliche*'), but makes recovering an annoyning job.

I hope, there is a way to finally fix this soon again (like in 2.5.1p2 some
years ago). Thanks.

Marc

What are the things to be taken care of while upgrading the amanda server

Have a look at the changelog:
http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/3.1_features

The only two changes I made was changing my chg-compat:chg-zd-mtx config

define changer "LTO3_Changer" {
tpchanger "chg-compat:chg-zd-mtx"
changerfile "/etc/amanda/KAS/chg-zd-mtx.conf"
changerdev "/dev/changer"
tapedev "tape:/dev/tape"
}

to chg-robot

define changer "LTO3_Changer" {
   tpchanger "chg-robot:/dev/changer"
   changerfile "/etc/amanda/KAS/chg-zd-mtx-state"
   property"tape-device" "0=tape:/dev/tape"
   property"eject-before-unload" "no"
   property"use-slots" "1-18"
   property"load-poll" "20 s poll 15 s until 120 s"
}

because it's deprecated. And Second: amandapass moved:
The default amandapass file for the amsamba application is
$CONFIG_DIR/amandapass, but it is /etc/amandapass for program GNUTAR. Don't
forget to move the file if you switch to the amsamba application.

Will the backup that has already taken using the previous version work with
the newer one??

You can restore with 3.1.1 backups made with older version. Also you don't
have to update your clients (here I have 3.1.1 on the server and 2.6.1p2 and
on some 2.4.4p1 on client side). I also had checked to do a restore over the
network from a 3.1.1 server using a 2.6.1p2 client. Everything fine.

Please help me with safe procedures. The amanda server is running in RHEL5

But I found 2 bugs in 3.1.1:
1.) amrecover can't work with files/directories containing german umlauts
(don't know if other characters than english ones make problems too).

2.) amandapass: The columns can only be separated by one space/tab not more!

For both bugs Dustin wrote patches. I allready had tested them successfully
and I gave him feedback some hours ago. I think they will be included in 3.1.2
that should be released in a few days.

MArc

You have to adjust the authentication to the servers one. It's all descriped
in the article you referenced too (see the link next to "bsd UDP authentication").

If you setup up e. g. BSD UDP authentication, like descriped in the linked
article, you have change your client (x)inetd configuration to that, too.

I use "auth bsd" (dumptype section) here, so I need the following in my client
xinetd configuration:

...
server_args = -auth=bsd amdump
...

You can apply it without recompiling, but it will take a little hand-holding:

No. I mean: I haven't this two variables in my config. And if a variable is
not there, then I guess amanda uses it's internal default values for that. The
manpage shows that default values for many options, that are used, when not
configured.

A year or so ago there was some confusion over - or _, and we realized
that half of our params had - and half had _. Since there was no
rhyme or reason to it (we had a parameter or two with *both* if I
recall correctly), we decided to make the config consider them to be
the same thing. It ain't pretty, but it works. So you can spell it
either way.

Ok. It's just confusing. The warning says "_" and the manpage says "-". Maybe
it would be good to use one way everywhere in the application/documentation
and allow both (for backward compatibility) in the configuration.

Please also have a look at my "3.1.1: Bug in function that reads amandapass"

Two config variables produce a warning with their default values

2010-08-06 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hello,

amcheck (3.1.1) shows the following warning:

>WARNING: flush_threshold_dumped (100) must be less than or equal to
> flush_threshold_scheduled (0).

But I haven't configured any of the two variables - so they use their internal
defaults. But the default values seem not to be perfect, when they produce
this warning.

Also: The manpage have "flush-threshold-dumped" and
"flush-threshold-scheduled" instead of "flush_threshold_dumped" and
"flush_threshold_scheduled". What is the right spelling of the variable names?

3.1.1: Bug in function that reads amandapass

2010-08-05 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hello,

I found an little bit annoying bug on 3.1.1:

When the colums in the file "amandapass" are separated with more than one
space and/or tab, then username/password is not reccognized and the connect is
tried as "guest" (what fails if authentication is required).

My "amandapass" contains:
//amplicon/backup$  username%passwordMUC

"amcheck" returns:
ERROR: nucleus.mr.lfmg.de: smbclient: Anonymous login successful
ERROR: nucleus.mr.lfmg.de: smbclient: tree connect failed:
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Attached find the logs.

Removing all additional spaces/tabs fixes the problem, but makes the file
looking confusing.

Marc

Why vtapes are filled up to 100% and LTO3 tapes not?

2010-07-04 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hi,

I'm using amanda 2.6.1p2 and I'm wondering, why my vtapes are allways filled
up to 100%, while LTO3 tapes are not:

vtapes:
  LabelTime Size %NbNc
  KDD103 2:5366457M 100.084 101
  KDD104 1:0066459M 100.01535
  KDD105 2:0666459M 100.0 022
  KDD106 0:5166459M 100.02038

LTO3 tapes:
  LabelTime Size %NbNc
  KAS039 8:09 203954M 52.881 135
  KAS027 5:18 287192M 74.418 107
  KAS037 2:26 187271M 48.51270
  KAS038 2:12 200444M 51.9 669

The configuration is for both exaclty the same (e. g. dumptypes,
tape_splitsize, etc), except the tapetype definition:

define tapetype LTO3 {
comment "LTO3 (hardware compression off)"
length 386048 mbytes
filemark0 kbytes
speed 50520 kps
blocksize 32
file-padtrue
}

define tapetype HDD {
comment "vtape"
length 66460 mbytes
filemark1 kbytes
blocksize 32
file-padtrue
}

Any idea?

Marc

But the manpage says:

Who's wrong? Manpage or program code?

Check the cable and the terminator. Mostly something is wrong with that if
hardware errors occur or speed is to low. Maybe someone bend some pins, when

normally we use reiserfs on all of our servers. The only reason we decided to
use ext3 for the vtapes is that it took several minutes to mount a big (mine
is 12 TB) parition with reiserfs.

You can set the group of the device to amanda's group and chmod g+w.

Have you allready labeled tapes? If not:

# man amlabel

If you have allread labeled tapes, check, if the label of your tapes fit
"labelstr" parameter in amanda.conf. Also check if the tapes are also written
by amanda. Then it depents on your settings when amanda will use the same tape
again. If you want to see amanda an allready used tape as new, relabel it with
-f with the same name.

I am looking to backup directly to tapes.

Directly from your clients to tape? This is not a good idea. You should
allways use a holding disk out of performance reasons.

Please send us your xinetd.conf.

Nagios Check for running services

2009-04-16 Thread Marc Muehlfeld

Hi,

I'm playing around with Nagios and try to let it check if the services are
reachable on my server. For the two TCP ports it's no problem, but for the UDP
check it is required to "talk" with the service, to have a response.

The Nagios plugin check_udp needs a send (a string that I send to the service)
and a response (a string that I get back to make sure, it is answering) string.

# /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_udp -H {MyBackupServer} -p 10080
With UDP checks, a send/expect string must be specified.
Usage:check_udp -H host -p port [-w ] [-c ] [-s
] [-e ] [-q ][-m ] [-d
] [-t ] [-r ] [-M ] [-v]
[-4|-6] [-j] [-D ] [-S ] [-E]

What string can I send to 10080/udp and what should I expect to get back?

Regards
Marc

Default: 10 days. The number of days in the backup cycle. Each disk will
get a full backup at least this often. Setting this to zero tries to do a

I used my calculator to add the filesizes of your holding disk: 18.363.547 Kb

My questions are
1) Don't understand why I can't flush less than 20GB of data to my tapes which
are supposed to hold 20GB raw and more compressed. I have compression turned
off on the drive. I thought I was compressing the dumps, but I just checked the
disklist and amanda.conf and found I wasn't.

How much is the "length" parameter of the tapetype you use? Have you created
your own tapetype definition, by using amtapetype? This fills a tape up to the
end with data to find out the parameter for your tape.

2) Is there any way to compress the files now on the holdingdisk before they're
taped?

If you configured compression in your dumptype section it allready is
compressed. If not, I think amanda can't handle the restore, if you compress
the holdingdisk data and flush it to tape.

If you installed by rpm, reinstall it. Or use the rpm command to have a
look at the files inside to see the filelist and permissions.

If you installed by source, -> "make install" again.

It's a off-topic question, but I just ask out of curiosity (don't know
much about LVM snapshots yet):

If I do a LVM snapshot of a running VM (or e.g. databases, too) and backup
it, what happens if I restore it later? The VDI was open while the backup
was done (and the information inside the VDI show this too, I guess). If I
start the VM after the restore, doesn't cause this problems? I guess
applications expect files with finalized written data (from the previous
shutdown) on startup.
