Re: Dumpcycle 0 doesn't do just full backups of DLEs
You can increase runtapes, ... maxdumpsize is not set in my amanda.conf > ... or set maxdumpsize if you want to allow amanda to do more backup than the tape space (useful with a lot of holdingdisk). But e.g. last month, amanda (3.3.0) filled 5 tapes (runtapes was set to 5) and put the rest into the holdingdisk, so I could flush it later: >> These dumps were to tapes KAS076, KAS047, KAS051, KAS052, KAS050. >> Not using all tapes because 5 tapes filled; runtapes=5 does not allow >> additional tapes. >> There are 186067M of dumps left in the holding disk. >> Run amflush to flush them to tape. Amanda dumped all with level 0 and what could not put to tape, was left in the holdingdisk. -- Marc Muehlfeld (IT-Leiter) Zentrum fuer Humangenetik und Laboratoriumsmedizin Dr. Klein und Dr. Rost Lochhamer Str. 29 - D-82152 Martinsried Telefon: +49(0)89/895578-0 - Fax: +49(0)89/895578-780 http://www.medizinische-genetik.de

Dumpcycle 0 doesn't do just full backups of DLEs
Hi, we have one set with "dumpcycle 0" for monthly off-site backups that was running fine for a long time. Last weekend it was the first time, that amanda (3.3.0) decided not to do level-0-only for this set. Many DLEs were just dumped in level 1: > planner: nucleus.mr.lfmg.de /BACKUP 20110903210001 0 "[dumps too big, 1320 KB, full dump delayed]" > planner: genome.mr.lfmg.de /BACKUP 20110903210001 0 "[dumps too big, 2916 KB, full dump delayed]" There were enough usable tapes in the library (and if not, amanda left the rest in the holdingdisk in the past). Also the holdingdisk is having 2TB free space (what is enough to hold almost the whole backup). Any idea what could be wrong and how can I really force amanda to do only level-0 ("dumpcycle 0" doesn't seem to be enough). Why does Amanda not use my new labled tapes?
Hi, I increased my vTape pool during the last days, but amanda is still only writing to the old tapes that were already in use and not to the new ones. If I change the tapelist entry from > 0 KDD181 reuse to an old date > 210100 KDD181 reuse the vTape is used in the next run. Hello, currently I backup to a storage system and copy it to a second one to ensure, that if it breaks, I still have my vTapes on the second one. What I mean: When amanda is working here, first a lot of the DLEs that have been dumped are put on the holding disk first, while amanda is dumping other DLEs. Later amanda is putting them to tape. Why not earlier? In my amstatus output you can see, that 95 of 121 DLEs had already been dumped. 1 of the 95 was allready put to tape. The other 94 DLEs are still in the holdingdisk at the time I grabbed this output. Later they are all send to tape. And what I want is, that amanda put DLEs to tape, when the dump to the holdingdisk is finished. Currently this waste time, because many DLEs are collected at the holding disk and and the taper is idle. The whole backup could be finished earlier, if this delay wouldn't be there. When I directly dump to tape, only one DLE can be backuped at the same time. Regards, Marc

It's getting more and more strange: Restore of a file with umlaut totally fails if you try to restore over network (client and server are both 3.2.0). On the nagios host, where you installed check_mk, you have /etc/check_mk (were main.mk and others files are located). If you run checks on the nagios host via MRPE, you have just to create the mrpe.cfg file. On clients that have just the check_mk agent, you have to create this folder and the mrpe.cfg file by yourself. Thre is an asterisk plugin already on myserverip ,i wanted to use that one, is there any easier to monitor Asterisk using check_mk ? Depending on the plugin you have, you have to decite from where it has to be executed. If it's a plugin that checks something local (like processes, existence of files,...) you have to put it on the client. If it's something that does a remote check (like checking if a port is open or a webpage can be reached,...) the plugin is executed from the nagios host, because you want to check if the service is available over network. Of course you can execute remote checks on other hosts too (e. g. if you want to check if a MySQL login is possible from host A to host B, you put the plugin to Host A and execute it via MRPE). 3.2.0: add command in amrecover fails on trailing slash of directory names
Hello, I did testings with 3.2.0 and discovered a problem in amrecover. In previous versions, I copy/pasted directory names to the 'add' command. This fails now, because 'add' doesn't accept the '/' at the end any more. If I type it without, it works.: amrecover> ls 2010-10-21-21-00-02 "test/" amrecover> add "test/" File "test/" doesn't exist in directory amrecover> add "test" Added dir "/test/" at date 2010-10-16-21-00-02 The 'cd' command still allows the slash at the end like privious version. 3.2.0: Bug with German umlauts
Hello, I reported this problem for 2.5.1p2 and it was fixed by Jean-Louis. It came back in 3.1.1, where I got a patch from Dustin which fixed it for restoring on the server, but not when restoring on the client. But he said it was to late to add the patch to 3.1.2. Today I upgraded to 3.2.0 and it's still broken. amrecover shows files with umlauts: 2010-10-22-09-32-21 "M\\303\\266gliche Zusatzkosten f\\303\\274r QM-Projekt.odt" The only way to recover is adding the file with wildcards (like 'add M*gliche*'), but makes recovering an annoyning job. I hope, there is a way to finally fix this soon again (like in 2.5.1p2 some years ago). Thanks. I also had checked to do a restore over the network from a 3.1.1 server using a 2.6.1p2 client. Everything fine. Please help me with safe procedures. The amanda server is running in RHEL5 But I found 2 bugs in 3.1.1: 1.) amrecover can't work with files/directories containing german umlauts (don't know if other characters than english ones make problems too). 2.) amandapass: The columns can only be separated by one space/tab not more! Re: Two config variables produce a warning with their default values
Am 06.08.2010 16:13, schrieb Dustin J. Mitchell: I think you mean "default" as "included in the example config". No. I mean: I haven't this two variables in my config. And if a variable is not there, then I guess amanda uses it's internal default values for that. The manpage shows that default values for many options, that are used, when not configured. A year or so ago there was some confusion over - or _, and we realized that half of our params had - and half had _. Since there was no rhyme or reason to it (we had a parameter or two with *both* if I recall correctly), we decided to make the config consider them to be the same thing. It ain't pretty, but it works. So you can spell it either way. Ok. It's just confusing. The warning says "_" and the manpage says "-". Maybe it would be good to use one way everywhere in the application/documentation and allow both (for backward compatibility) in the configuration. Two config variables produce a warning with their default values
Hello, amcheck (3.1.1) shows the following warning: >WARNING: flush_threshold_dumped (100) must be less than or equal to > flush_threshold_scheduled (0). But I haven't configured any of the two variables - so they use their internal defaults. But the default values seem not to be perfect, when they produce this warning. Also: The manpage have "flush-threshold-dumped" and "flush-threshold-scheduled" instead of "flush_threshold_dumped" and "flush_threshold_scheduled". What is the right spelling of the variable names? Nagios Check for running services
Hi, I'm playing around with Nagios and try to let it check if the services are reachable on my server. For the two TCP ports it's no problem, but for the UDP check it is required to "talk" with the service, to have a response. It's a off-topic question, but I just ask out of curiosity (don't know much about LVM snapshots yet): If I do a LVM snapshot of a running VM (or e.g. databases, too) and backup it, what happens if I restore it later? The VDI was open while the backup was done (and the information inside the VDI show this too, I guess). If I start the VM after the restore, doesn't cause this problems? I guess applications expect files with finalized written data (from the previous shutdown) on startup. I've only had it for 22 months, so I can't say what is going to happen after 3 years ;-) , but so far I haven't had to send it back for anything. We have 3 of them now. One just arrived and is still in the box. Meanwhile I have a Tandberg StorageLoder 2U LTO3 (service conditions are the same) since 11 month. 3 weeks ago it showed a "servo error". The first technician said the whole library must replaced, because it is a hardware error. But later I got the information by a second one, that I have to do a firmware update, that changes some thresholds. This fixed it. I hope it isn't that often broken like my last Tandberg, otherwise it is the last device that I bought from this vendor. -- Marc Muehlfeld (Leitung IT) Zentrum fuer Humangenetik und Laboratoriumsmedizin Dr. Klein und Dr. Rost Lochhamer Str. 29 - D-82152 Martinsried Telefon: +49(0)89/895578-0 - Fax: +49(0)89/895578-78 http://www.medizinische-genetik.de
