amanda question

2001-10-09 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hello

thanks for your help about my tapecycle question, I labeled my tapes
and I think they are fine, tonight I'm going to test. My question now
is that I would like to do monthly backups to be sure that always I have
a least a copy from my data outside. I know that in this case I have to
use another amanda configuration than the configuration that I have for
my daily backup. I would like to have 12 tapes, one for every month.
I'm not sure if use incremental and reuse tapes or full backup every
month (maybe it is the best) I am thinking to use a script to put an
condition for cron to switch between two configuration, but really I
want to know if it is possible to do that (monthly backups) and if it
is how can I set up the dumcycle and my runspercycle.

thanks and I hope so that my question is not too silly
thanks again

Sandra

tapecycle

2001-09-26 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi everybody:

I am using amanda since one year ago and at the beginning I used to
have a single tape drive and run amanda only 5 days per week, now I
have an autoloader because I use two tapes per run and I would like to
include on day more to the runpercycle. So I would like run amanda 6
days per week. then using the rule that i found in amanda chapter I
have

dumcycle 4 weeks
runspercycle 24 (4weeks * 6 days)
extras in just in case an any error 1
tapecycle 50 (24+1 * two tapes) .

Now I am using only 25 tapes so I would like to know If it is possible
include 25 tapes more and if it does How could I use amlabel to label
them ?

Please if somebody can help I really appreciate.

Thanks a lot

Sandra

I don't understand what you did. The patch I sent is not in CVS. You
need to apply it to your 2.4.2p2 sources.

Could you tell me How can use this patch

Cd to the top level of your Amanda source tree (the one with the
configure script). Put the patch file from my letter someplace, e.g.
 /tmp/stream_client.diff. Then run patch /tmp/stream_client.diff.

Now, run make distclean, then start the Amanda build over again from
./configure ... and re-install at least on the client.

amrecover again

2001-07-18 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi:

I ran amrecover using amanda-2.4.2p2 without any udp or tcp ranges and
was fine (i guess). I tried to recover a directory database . I
used the directory that i created in my area
/Local/Users/sandra/restore. From there I ran
/usr/local/sbin/amrecover -C miro_daily -s miro.tomandandy.com -t
miro.tomandandy.com -d /dev/nst0.
I set the host that I want to recover my data as sethost
whiteley.tomadnandy.com and I set the disk as setdisk
/Loca/Users/lauren.
I did add database. After that extract and amrecover showed me that this
information was on tape miro_daily-07 and the rest on my holding disk as
/whiteley.tomandandy.com_Local_Users_lauren.1. I load the tape manually
and amanda started to read from the tape. After many hours amrecover
stop but still the prompt was there amrecover and I checked in
/tmp/amanda for amrecover debug information and I got this:

Hi:

I using amrecover from amanda version 2.4.2-19991216-beta1 from another machine different than the tape server, because Still I have problems with amrecover from amandand 2.4.2p2 that is the version that I have installed on my tape server machine. The thing is that I want to recover some information that I have on one tape and another in my holding disk but I don't know if it is normal but amrecover only copied some files but not all my directory. I have all my level zero on the tape but amrecover only copied some files so I don't know if the rest is on the holding disk. When I was running amrecover I could see all the directories but when I checked the direcotry that I used to recover it was incomplete. It is normal or it is something that I have to do before.

The size is 2.2 Gb it is not too big but for my machines seems that it is.

I have as etimout 6000 and dtimeout 1800 but I don;t think so that they are the problem.

amanda Problems

2001-06-18 Thread Sandra Panesso
Hi everybody:

I posted few days ago a question (big one), but I have not received any answer so I don't know if I was clear or not (my english) so I am trying to understand my problem by myself. but anyway I need to ask you something to verify that everything is ok with my configuration. I have now a HP surestore 24X6 autoloader, and I using chg-zd-scsi changer file configuration. In amanda configuration I defined as runtapes 5 but still I have as dumpcycle 4 weeks, as runspercycle 20 and as tapecycle 25. is that configuration ok? another detail that maybe is important is: at the beginning I used to run amanda five days (since tuesday until saturday a.m) but since few months I included one day more (sunday) because sometimes people works on weekends, so I don't know if my configuration for the (runtapes, runspercycle, etc ) now is enough. I ask you is because I have problems with one machine when it has full dumps, every times when I'm going to do amflush I get an error that says "taper: retrying whiteley.tomandandy.com:/Local.0 on new tape: [writing file: No space left on device]" " out the tape. So I want to be sure that my configuration is ok to see other details that maybe i'm missing them.

Please help me with this because I need to migrate this machine to use another O.S but i want to back it up correctly before to do something.

Thanks for your time

i need help

2001-06-12 Thread Sandra Panesso
Hi everybody:

I start to use the tape cleaner but I have had some problems. When i run amcheck all the time I got the error
amcheck-server: slot 5: rewinding tape: No medium found
amcheck-server: fatal slot 6: mtx: Cleaning Cartridge Installed and Ejected
ERROR: label miro_daily-5 or new tape not found in rack
(expecting tape miro_daily-5 or a new tape)
the tape miro_daily-5 is there on the first slot (1).

so I have to use mtx -f /dev/sga load slot 1 after that I run amcheck again and I don't have problem. I don't think so that it is normal because before when i didn't use the cleaner tape I never got any error like that. This my changer configuration

number_configs 1

I have another question that maybe is related or maybe not.

I 'm using as dumcycle 4 weeks and tapecycle 25 tapes. To run amadump I have in my cron 6 days so I don't know if it is ok. I ask you is because since few days ago I have seen that when I have to run amflush for my weekend backups I get an error "whiteley.t /Local lev 0 FAILED [out of tape]"

so I have been reading on amanda pages and this mailing list and I think that maybe is not correct my configuration so I would like to be sure . This my amanda.conf

2001-06-04 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi everybody:

I have a HP surestore 24X6 autoloader and I using chg-zd-mtx
configuration file with
dev /dev/nst0
scsitapedev /dev/sgb
startuse0
enduse 5
statfile/usr/local/etc/amanda/miro_daily/tape0-slot

the thing is that I have three files on /usr/local/etc/amanda/miro_daily
that really I don't know what they are mean. the files are:

changer.conf-access
changer.conf-clean
changer.conf-slot

the true is that I don't have my tape cleaner yet so I don't know if it
is a big deal.

Please any explanation, I would really appreciated

chg-zd-mtx

2001-04-19 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi Everybody:

excuses if my question is too silly, but the thing is that I have
amanda 2.4.2 running with chg-multi but now i have a new autoloader hp
surestore 24X6i and I don't know what it is the changer file that I
have to use. I read /docs/tape.changer and I found that chg-zd-mtx is
the best option for me but I don't know if you have a chg-zd-mtx
configuration file as example to use. I remember that when I used
chg-multi the first time I copied the chg-multi configuration example.
And I used it in my amanda.conf file but now I don't know what I have
to do.

I install mtx 1.2 on red hat linux 6.2 (this my tape server) and it is
working but I don't know what it is the next step with amanda.

I'm sorry again if I bother you but I need help.

amanda problems

2001-03-20 Thread Sandra Panesso

HI everybody:

I have a machine with Mac OS X that i am trying to backup for
level 4 but i get an error " Data write: File too large".
The first time that I included this machine into the disklist
everything was fine, I could backup but the problem was when I tried
to backup all the area /Local that is aprox 12 Gb. I have two holding
disks. The First one is about 7.6 Gb and the last one has 4 Gb.
IN my amanda.conf i defined the chunksize value 2000 Mb less than
2 Gb as I read in the FAQ but Still I get the same error.

I don't know if you need more details. I would appreciate if
somebody can help me
Thanks

tapelist question

2001-02-26 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi everybody:

I have a new tape drive with DDS3 tapes. I changed my amanda
configuration to use the DDS3 tape and I would like to know if i can
relabel my new tapes or if I have to create another tapecycle. I
ask you because today i think i did something wrong, I have a
tapecycle from 1 until 25 tapes but to test I relabeled one of my
new tapes with amlabel -f label # 12, that it is a label that
already i have on my old tapes , and it worked fine but when i ran
amcheck to see if it can recognize the tape, I saw something like
this "amcheck -server: slot 1 : date X" so i checked the tapelist
and i found that the tape that i relabeled had a zero on the date
field. Now i don;t know if i can continue with my old configuration
or if i have to relabel all the new tapes or if i have to create a
new tapecycle.

If somebody can help me i would really appreciated.

time out problem

2001-02-22 Thread Sandra Panesso

HI everybody:

I'm sorry if my question is too silly but I would like to know if
etimeout and dtimeout are the same thing. I ask you because i have
problem with a machine that today reported data time out. I check
the mailing list if somebody have had the same problem and i found
different ways to fix this and many suggestion about increase the
"dtimeout", so I check my configuration for amanda and i found that
my "etimeout is 800" but i don't have anything for "dtimeout" .

I have amanda 2.4.2 so i don;t know if I missing the dtimeout value
or if is enough with the "etimeout". Again i'm sorry if this
questions is too simple but I want to be sure what is the value that
i have to increase and if I have to include the "dtimeout" value
because in my current configuration i don't have it

Thanks for your help and I hope to receive any answer.

amrestore problems

2001-01-31 Thread Sandra Panesso

hello everybody:
I need to restore a data that it is my holding disk
but I couldn't.
My holding disk is /amanda_holding and my amanda data in there
is 20001215/duchamp.tomandandy._Local_Users.0.1.
I tried amrestore -p /amanda_holding/20001215/duchamp.tomandandy._Local_Users.0.1
| tar xvf duchamp.tomandandy._Local_Users.0.1 but I got
two errors :
amrestore: 0: skipping cont dumpfile: date 20001215 host duchamp.tomandandy.com
disk /Local/Users lev 0 comp .gztar:
tar: duchamp.tomandandy.com._Local_Users.0.1: Not found in archive
I understood the last error is because this file is not the tar
file but the thing that i don't understand is when I checked amrestore.c
source code amrestore is taking /amanda_holding/20001215/duchamp.tomandandy.com._Local_Users.0.1
as tapename, so i don't know if it is because amrestore is trying to find
the tape or if to use amrestore to restore files from the holding
disk i have to define something else
Please if does anybody knows something about this please help
me
Sandra

amflush question

2000-12-19 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi Everybody:

I know that I did this question before but I still have problems with
amflush. I am trying to amflush my data from my holding disk, the data

size is 5.3 Gb and my tape doesn't have enough space. Somebody told me
that I had to do amflush many times until my holding disk cleaned out
but I have used four tapes ( so I did four times amflush) is it
normal? or do I have to redefined my chunksize to split more my
directories when amanda have to use the holding disk?. Or how many
times I have to do amflush?

Any suggestions.

Thanks a lot

Sandra

Mac OS X Beta

2000-11-17 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi everyone:

I am trying to install amanda on Mac OS X Beta but when i ran
./configure something wrong happened because after ./configure checked
my system and the options that i used , the report from config.status
was "unescaped newline inside substitute pattern creating amplot/amplot"

" unescaped newline inside substitute pattern creating
client-src/patch-system.sh"
and more
my options for ./configure were:
./configure --without-server --with-gnutar=/usr/bin..
I used without server because I am compiling on a client and when I
check config.log I saw that amanda checked "mt" and I don't understand
why if this machine with Mac OS X Beta is a client not the tape server,
could anybody explain it to me?.
I defined that gnutar is in /usr/bin because i checked and this the
place where it is.
I don't know if I have to change something or if I have to defined
anything else.

If somebody have tried to install amanda on Mac OS X beta please let me.

Thanks a lot

holding disk problems

2000-11-15 Thread Sandra Panesso

Hi

finally I found my problem with my sonicwall firewall. the problem was
the timeout and the machine that I was trying to backup is running on
Mac OS X Server and it is too slow so took a long time to compress.
Then I had to compress on the tape server, I used fast compression but

I still have a problem, today I got the error "data write: file too
large" . My Holding disk is on a hard drive with 8 Gb and available
7.6 Gb and the data that I am trying to backup is 5.2 Gb. In my
configuration (amanda.conf) I defined the holding disk in this way:

holding disk hd1 {
  comment "main holding disk"
  directory "/amanda_holding"
  use -10 Mb
  chunksize -1
}

I don't know what is the problem or If I have to change the use or the
chunksize values, I found that when I use a negative value for USE this
means that I can use all space except that value and for the CHUNKSIZE
-1 means that for big dumps i can dumped on multiple files on my
holding disk so I don't understand why i got the error "file too large".

I know that the holding disk is used for every dump for every machine in

parallel but I am not sure about in what order. I'm sorry if I am
doing many questions maybe with easy answers that every knows but after
almost two months trying to fix the problem I don't know what can I do.

If somebody can help I would really, really really appreciated

Thanks

Sandra
