accessing data from tape on fresh amanda system (disaster recover)

2003-08-14 Thread shaun feeley
hi guys,

in the process of getting a disaster recovery plan in place.
additional to our night backups to tape ive set up a fortnightly full
backup of our system again to tape that will be stored of site. my
question is if the system running our amanda config is destroyed. could
our externaly stored tapes be access on a fresh amanda system? sort of
thinking if tapelist, and /var/lib/amanda index files are backed up it
should be possible.

is it possible? is there a better way?

thanks shaun

Re: still having problems with name resolution backup to disk >ofNT servers via samba

2003-06-18 Thread shaun feeley
hi paul thanks for your suggestion
when i connect to the NT server cytopia01 using smbclient and try and
get a file i recieve the same error
smb: \Administration\jill-andrew\jill-andrew\slide presentations\> get
"ppslides complete.ppt"
Call timed out: server did not respond after 2 milliseconds opening
remote file \Administration\jill-andrew\jill-andrew\slide
presentations\ppslides complete.ppt
smb: \Administration\jill-andrew\jill-andrew\slide presentations\>
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
however i can connect to the server and browse directories fine.
its confusing that although this share produces this error when i try
and get a file the other shares with same permissions on the nt server
will let me get files? with these shares i get the error
NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND

which i can reproduce if i try and cd into a directory with a space in
the name without using "", so i thought it could be due to spaces in
directory names but the other share thats not producing this error has
spaces in names as well, so i dont really know.

still having problems with name resolution backup to disk >of NTservers via samba

2003-06-15 Thread shaun feeley
ive been getting these errors for a couple of weeks now. last time i asked for help i was using ip's instead of host names in my disklist file. it was suggested that amanda was treating the ip's as host names and trying to resolve them, perhaps producing the errors i was getting. i have changed the ip's to full hostnames, but i am still getting the same errors?

cytopia01 is a nt server, i am backing up three large shares off two separate disks on cytopia01. my amandapass file has the full host name, and the amanda username and password for connecting to the nt server. now i can resolve the host name fine. and i can smbmount each area fine and browse files? this error is just produced when running amdump

###amandapass file
//cytopia01.intra.cytopia.com.au/shared amanda%password
//cytopia01.intra.cytopia.com.au/users amanda%password
//cytopia01.intra.cytopia.com.au/usershared amanda%password

strange error NT server backup to disk NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND

2003-06-05 Thread shaun feeley
hi guys,
wondering if anyone has an idea whats going on here.
im backing up an NT server ip 192.168.1.10 from my amanda setup on william.(to disk not tape)
now the backup appears to be working ie.. despite reams of strange results i am able to recover random files from my nightly backup. however i really want to work out whats going on here.
the last line NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND opening remote file /blah/blah. (where /blah/blah is the file in question)
is repeated for a great deal of files (i printed 25 pages from last nights report),
below is a copy of the error in question.

thanks for any help, one day ill get my head around this program and return the favour i hope

shaun
