I have implemented tape appending about one or two years ago. Your
warnings however still apply :)

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if you can write
your own tar archive to a tape and then let Amanda write to the tape
after that? If so, the answer is "no" (although some future changes in
the works might do this).

If you're asking if you can run Amanda one day, then run it again the
next day and append to the tape from the first day, the answer again is
"no", the main reason being that it is dangerous (what if the tape is
repositioned, for instance).

Again, future work may allow this, but only after you've aced an intensive
12 month "it's tape, what could possibly go wrong" course held once every
25 years in an outdoor classroom above the arctic circle (or, for you
"southern" folks, a similar course is held in life rafts on the Ross Sea).

Appending incrementals

2001-07-11 Thread Daniel

Is there a way to cause amanda to add incremental backups after an
existing tar archive? I have a 3gb filesystem to backup on 5 gb
disks. It is therefore feasible to backup the entire filesystem on a
single tape and still have room for additional incrementals.
