FWIW, tapedev while usng vtapes is apparently NOT defined in my
amanda.conf. ??

I think the 15 min install doc is dated and not or poorly maintained.

amanda-client.conf is a "relatively" recent addition. In there tape-dev
can be defined to allow recovery of backups on the client machine. You
need to tell it the server and which device to recover from. For small
installations like mine, it probably is not needed. And if you recover
on the server then transfer to the client, it is not needed either.

By staging, I presume you refer to the "holding disk". It does have
several benefits, particularly if going to real tape. Amanda was
developed for tape backup and later added "virtual tapes". You can
backup directly to the storage device, but as tape drives can only
handle one stream at a time, you can only be backing up 1 DLE. With
a holding disk you can backup multiple DLEs simultaneously.

Some sites use a separate network from the amanda server to the NAS.

New Installation

2018-11-02 Thread Chris Miller
Hi Folks,

I'm working carefully though " [ https://www.zmanda.com/quick-backup-setup.html
| The 15-Minute Backup Solution ] " It is pretty good, but it confuses me a bit
and it has raised questions.

I am in the first client setup section, "Iron". I'm configuring a "tapedev".
The pdf version references this as Section 5.1 and the HTML version doesn't
mention it at all. I am instructed to edit /etc/amanda/amanda-client.conf, in
particular I need to define "tapedev".When I was also told to do this on the
server for the time when I need to backup elements of the server. I have the
same questions in that context.

So, I have a few questions:

* Why is this definition of "tapedev" in /etc/amanda/amanda-client.conf
mentioned in the PDF version, but not in the HTML version? Do I not need to do
this yet, or is this an oversight in the HTML version?
* Assuming that I do have to do this, am I designating capacity to stage
backups, or am I designating an interface of some kind through which backups
will flow?

Now I'm confused about the behavior of AMANDA . I've read about "staging"
backups and how this is a good architecture, and to that end I have installed a
big disk in the AMANDA server, but it is not clear to me if this is a benefit
to me. I will be backing up to NAS, so if I stage my backups on the server, I
need to put everything on the net twice -- once from client to server, and once
from server to NAS. Couldn't I just tell the client, "Put your backup there."
and designate the appropriate NAS?

I'm sure my questions are answered somewhere in some explanation of AMANDA
operations, but I haven't stumbled across this explanation yet, so if you have
one, I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks for the help,

Setting up new installation: permission errors

2004-12-06 Thread Kris Vassallo

I seem to be stuck with permission issues here. I'm setting up a new server and have created the appropriate directories and set (what i believe are) the appropriate permissions. When I run amlabel as the amanda user, I get the following:

$ /usr/sbin/amlabel DailySet1 DailySet101 slot 1
labeling tape in slot 1 (file:/backup0/amandadumps):
rewinding
amlabel: tape_rewind: tape open: file:/backup0/amandadumps: Permission denied

ls output shows the following
$ pwd ; ls -l
/backup0
total 4
drwxrwx--- 10 amanda disk 4096 Dec 6 14:29 amandadumps

Amanda is also a member of the disk group. As the amanda user I can actually touch the amandadumps folder as well as go into that folder and touch other files and folders but none of the amanda utilities seem to work. This is amanda 2.4.4 I don't get what the heck is going on here. Ideas?

Best advice is to read the chapter
http://www.backupcentral.com/amanda.html
or even to get the whole _Unix BackupRecovery_ book

A good place to start:

For changer specific stuff, look in docs/TAPE.CHANGERS. Also, there have
been some threads here concerning multi-drive libraries, so look through
the archives. Feel free to come back here when you hit issues (note that
we fully expect you to ;).
