Re: Indexing failed on /dev/md/dsk/d0 partition

2000-11-01 Thread John R. Jackson

/dev/md/dsk/d0 is a device disk for RAID5 partition (Sun's Solstice
Disksuite)
and in the disklist, I defined that partition as "nocomp-user", same as all
other partition in c0t0d0s0, c0t0d0s1, so forth. ...

That wasn't what I asked. I asked what name you used for the disk, not
what dumptype. In other words, what's in the first column of disklist?

... I wonder if I was supposed to specify a raw device
(e.g. /dev/md/rdsk/d0)? ...

That shouldn't matter.

I also asked:

... When I tried to cat the index file from amanda's
database and it was empty. ...

What do you mean it was "empty"? What does the directory structure
look like for this disk? Are there any files in the lowest level?

Here is what it looks like in my disklist. ...
and in index directory of homer:

Thanks.

So the index area is being created properly and the files are being
created, they are just empty (which is what you said, but I wasn't clear
about the details).

It might be that the index generation on the client is failing and
not sending anything across the pipe, or the server side may have
done something wrong, or the network connection may have been lost
(or something else :-).

I'd look in two places for more information. First is amdump.nn on the
tape server. Look for any out of the ordinary messages during the time
this file system was being backed up (between the FILE-WRITE/PORT-WRITE
and the time the dumper completes).

The other place I'd look is in the /tmp/amanda/sendbackup*debug file
on the client. But you'll have to catch one with the dump of this file
system, which may be tricky. I build Amanda with --with-pid-debug-files
so I can keep them apart. Look for any error messages and also that
the right restore program is being used and with the right arguments.

Apparently amanda failed to create index files for /dev/md/dsk/d0
partition on homer. However the indexing on all other paritions
(e.g. c0t0d0s0, c0t0d0s1, etc.) worked just fine. ...

What do you have in your disklist? The device names (e.g. c0t0d0s0)
or the mount point (e.g. /u01)? What about for the disk that "failed"?

Are you certain your dumptype for this disk has indexing enabled?

if it'll fix the problem.
