I assume you're using chg-zd-mtx and 2.4.3bX?

I suspect you're running afoul of a change that specifically did this
because not doing so caused other problems.  However, that was intended
for "-slot next" (or "prev", etc).  Since you asked for a specific slot,
I agree it's probably a bug that it auto-skipped to slot 1.

Could you send me the /tmp/amanda/chg-zd-mtx*debug file so I can confirm
what it did, then I'll try to come up with a fix.

There is no tape in slot 6, so I suppose ANY other tape would do . 
I suppose this is a bug.
