I've done this too with FB results as long as one is not trying to push any
power into the next stage, but only providing a voltage swing. Never had a
DX-100 so have to ask, in just what class are the 1625 modulator tubes
operating i.e., AB1 or AB2? If AB1 the scheme under discussion (or a phase
inverter, or an itty-bitty transformer) should work FB. Nada if AB2.

Hi Mike,

If it is the primary of the transformer that opened (usually is) you can
still use it to get you buy. Just put a resistor in the plate of the
audio driver tube, in place of the transformer primary. I think around
10k 2 watt will work ok. Then couple the plate of the driver to the grid
of one of the 1625s with a capacitor. Leave the secondary of the driver
transformer hooked to both grids and bias as it was.
It will work as an auto transformer to couple audio into both tubes.
Works fine! Although gain will be somewhat less than with the transformer.

Be sure to check to see what shorted to take out the transformer. Maybe
the tube.

Mike,
I tend to get rid of them when they fail, and use AB1 with
KT88 or KT90 tubes.

Another transformer will do, but you have to find a place to put it.
The original was that very little piece of crap, and you wont find
a substitute other than the original type to fit.
Best to put something bigger in anyway, or none at all!

Contrast the dx100 driver with the big one in the 32v series!

Mike-

I just went through the same problem with my 32V-1. I found that the Hammond
1:3 interstage transformer at AES would work. (I didn't try it though, as I got
an original 32V xfmr).

Mike,

What is the part number on the side of the transformer?

hi...

  4 ---)

  1

But be sure you do the ohmeter tests and make sure you know where the
'variable' arm is connect... a good 'eye' inspection should tell you
which one that is

Steve, using a ohmmeter, Find out which terminal is the wiper arm-
this is the hot side of the output. The cold side of the output
is also the neutral terminal. The other side of the winding is the
hot side of the line.Again hook up the line side to
each end of the windings, the neutral side is common to input and
output. The output terminals are the wiper and neutral.

Hello,
I bought a 20 amp 110 volt variac from an estate this past weekend. I
would

like to know what is the correct way to hook up the beast. It is made by
American Transformer Co. and the catalog number is 27666. It has four
terminals marked 1,2,3 and 4. Can I assume that 1 and 2 are input and 3,4
are output?

Thank you,
