Re: [AMRadio] Hamvention 2004
Hi again Dave, I am still sorting threough my mail. I don't know where you were but I counted 3 each 75A-4s. One was a bit ratty but I sure wouldn't kick it out os my bed, the other two were acceptable and one of those was being sold as a "Gold Dust Twins" package with a KWS-1. 73, W4AWM, John
Re: [AMRadio] Hamvention 2004
Hi Dave, Nice seeing you at Dayton. You blew it by leaving early. Today was great and the matket was loaded with buyers and sellers. It did not resemble the average Dayton Sunday at all then the lot isd half full. It was packed today. I sols most my stuff before I could get it all unloaded! The trip back was great. Good WX and not too much traffic. We left at 1:30 and pulled in to the house in Burke at 9:35PM. 73, John, W4AWM
Re: [AMRadio] Hamvention 2004
The weather did us in again! I left before noon on Saturday because of an all day rain. Weather on Friday was so, so. It drizzled in the afternoon off and on. Terrible when so much time and money is invested in these few days. Lots of wondering if they should move the Hamvention back to the last of April Flea market was not that impressive. Saw very little Collins or for that matter much early equipment. No doubt it finding its way to Ebay. There is no rain on Ebay! I'd be interested to kow how the weather was for Hamvention this year. I definitely enjoyed reading the "Chester's Almanac" though! RE: [AMRadio] Re: [Collins] Hamvention 2004
I was unable to make it this year, due to time factor. Wonder how the AM forum went? I recall last year attendance was down. Was it even lower this year? It used to never get rained out, back when they held it the 3rd weekend in April. Then someone got the brilliant idea of moving it to the 4th weekend in April, and it rained practically every year. So they moved it to May to escape the rain and cold, and although there have been a couple of rain-free events, weather still seems to be a problem. Apparently, the 3rd weekend in April by some quirk of nature turns out to usually be dry in that little corner of the world. After they moved it to the 4th weekend, I used to ask locals what the weather was like the week before, and inevitabley they would respond that the weather was fine then; that would have been a good weekend to have had the hamfest. Of course that third weekend would sometimes be cold, and I have seen snow, but the fleamarket rarely shut down. I recall one year in their brochure they mentioned that in 22 years the hamfest had been rained out only twice. I suspect that rain-free weekend in April is one factor in Dayton becoming such a ham radio mecca. Too bad someone had to mess with the date. -k4kyv _ Best Restaurant Giveaway Ever! Title: Re: [Collins] Hamvention 2004 The reproduction 55G-1 low frequency unit was on display at the Collins Forum on Friday morning and at 2317-2318. Unfortunately, because of the rain, we pulled out late Saturday morning. The 55G-1 reproduction unit will be available on a limited basis this summer for a suggested price of $500 in kit form only. The unit produced by Advanced Optics Limited in England will be distributed, as with all their Collins products, through the CRA. I saw an original one sell for $2,500 in the outdoor vendor area. Contact the CRA if you would like to reserve one. More information will be posted on the mail list and on the CRA website. Check into the CRA Collins nets as well on 75 and 20 meters for updates Incidentally, have you joined the CRA and subscribed to the Collins Journal - what are you waiting for? With IRLP the interest of newcomers seems to be more on the VHF and UHF gear from the Japanese manufacturers. I didn't see much boat anchor or vintage equipment (relative to prior years), nor did I see too many of the appliance op types buying any of the surplus land mobile stuff. Like you ... my main reason for going to Dayton nowdays is for the social experience. The flea market was probably less than two thirds sellers, and many spaces of that 2/3 it seemed were just convenient parking spaces with no sales evident. It was not uncommon to walk past many spaces with nothing there which was quite a departure from my previous 30 years of attending. Not only were there few pieces of Collins gear but there was not much other boat anchor era equipment or parts either. There sure was plenty of commercial two-way gear though. Surplus Sales of Nebraska, always good for some wishful Colllins parts collecting was barely there compared to its traditional representation. Hams attend for all sorts of reasons, some for the nostalgia, some for the forums and some for the latest and greatest, specifically the new Yaesu and Icom radios. Though it seemed much smaller in terms of crowds, commercial vendor participation and even food vendors, it's still a Mecca in May for many of us. Meeting old and new friends is always a bonus too.Of course it rained which is to be expected but unlike when held in April it didn't snow or sleet! Friday was pretty good rain-wise except for a few expected sprinkles. I'm grateful to the Dayton folks for all it takes to pull this event off and hope it continues for many more rainy springtimes.73, Roger NJ2R From: "David Knepper" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Date: Sat, 15 May 2004 21:37:03 -0400To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Cc: Electric Radio <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Subject: [Collins] Hamvention 2004 Another disappointing Hamvention due to the weather conditions.
