Re: [AMRadio] VIRGIN ARC 5's

2005-01-27 Thread Bob Macklin
Hi Larry,

I am originally from San Mateo, Ca. about 25 mi south of San Francico. In
the 60s there were 2 surplus stores in SF that had stacks of ARC-5 equipment
and the 28MC tank radios. And the stuff was cheap.

I joined the USAF in 1952 and the ARC-5s were still used in some aircraft
like the T-6 and C-45. I got sucked into ham radio in 1957 while stationed
in Austin, Tx. Through AF MARS we could get all the ARC-5s we wanted.

With the apperent renewed interest in tupe gear and AM operation I am
thinking seriously about acquiring some ARC-5s for portable operation.

I just wish they were as easy to get as they were in 1960. On eBay you
really don't know what you will get until it arrives.

When I read your post my first thought was that this is indeed a Small

The radio gear came from an Army Surplus store in Albany, Or. A J-38 was a

Re: [AMRadio] ARRL's Threatened Bandwidth Petition - action taken?

2005-01-27 Thread peter markavage
Looks like the ARRL will not file this amended proposal until later this
year at the earliest.
>From the ARRL web site:

Draft Petition to Establish Subbands by Bandwidth Modified
Following recommendations of the ARRL Executive Committee, the Board
adopted changes to the League's pending petition that would propose
segmenting bands principally by maximum bandwidth rather than by emission
type. The petition remains in the draft stage, although the Board has
reviewed the document and membership input.

Board members okayed three amendments to the draft. These would call on
the FCC to permit non-telephony emissions not exceeding 3 kHz at 10.135
to 10.150 MHz, to prohibit "continuous" test transmissions on most
frequencies above 51 MHz, and to clarify §97.309 of the rules to specify
that amateur stations may use any published digital code, as long as
other rules are observed.

Additionally, the Executive Committee will evaluate whether to recommend
retaining, deleting or amending §97.221(b) and/or §97.221(c) of the rules
regarding automatic control of digital emissions. "This evaluation shall
include, but not be limited to, the effect of these rules, and the effect
of proposed changes in these rules, on APRS and other current and planned
digital communications in the HF bands," the resolution noted.

The Board will consider the amended bandwidth petition and the Executive
Committee's further report at its July meeting. The League is not
expected to file the petition with the FCC until later this year at the
earliest.

[AMRadio] Hello!!

2005-01-27 Thread Rich Fuller
Hello everyone, Rich (N0MN/5) here, I've been bitten by the AM and nostalgia
bugs and will need help (NOT a cure, though, hi). My dad got his Tech license
back in '59 or '60 (I was in junior high) and he put together a 6M AM station
using a Hammarlund HQ-129X (although I just can't remember how he received on
6M) and a home brew transmitter. He passed away in '92 but some of the fondest
memories I have are he and I out in his converted chicken coop hamshack tuning
around on the old HQ. Even with a 4el 6M beam we could pick up foreign
broadcast stations and hams on the lower bands. Oh, the audio that the
Hammarlund had!! I had been looking for an HQ-129X for years at hamfests and
in ads and even in last few years on ebay but was never successful until
recently. I picked up one on ebay from a very nice gentleman up in Washington
state that gave me the history behind the radio. It will require a few parts
replaced which I have already started on but I think it will work just fine. I
also found a near mint Gonset GSB-100 transmitter that I don't think I will
have to do anything to. I say all that to ask a question: It will be a while
before I get the AM station all set up and I've been listening to some of the
AMers on 75M and I have picked up that there is a wealth of experience and
knowledge out there and I have AM capability on a more 'modern' rig (IC-756),
is there any unwritten rule about jumping in on a radio that doesn't 'glow'??
As I get more into the restoration project I would like to ask for advice but
certainly want to comply with protocol.
Thanks guys,
Rich Fuller NØMN

Rich,

While AM ativity seems to be mainly a BA segment of the hobby iot really is
not. Many of the AMers run both tube stuff and solid state stuff. Class E AM
Txes are solid state.

If you can hear them give them a call. Where are you located?

[AMRadio] FS: Spectrum Analyzer Tek 492P

2005-01-27 Thread Merz Donald S
I am going to sell my Spectrum Analyzer. It's a Tek 492P. DC to some number of
gigahertz that is incomprehensible to me. It has all 3 options installed, one
of which is the digital store and hold feature. It also comes with all the
original manuals and user guides--a stack maybe 12 inches high and weighing 15
pounds. One of the guides is "How To Use The Spectrum Analyzer In Your AM Radio
Station". The lid is full of some accessories that were probably quite
expensive that I have never used--attenuators, splitters and what not. This is
a reasonably modern, solid-state instrument in excellent looking and working
condition. It has been used very little.

I can get $2500 for this on eBay with no problem. But if someone here can use
it, I'd let it go for $2100 plus shipping. I'm not looking for any trades. I
want the money for a project.

Thanks for looking.

[AMRadio] Display Tubes Anyone?

2005-01-27 Thread Merz Donald S
I've got a small box of "display tubes" here if anyone wants them. They are all
bad for one reason or another--dud, weak, short, etc. The box includes Eimac
100Ths, RCA 203As, a VT-4C, some 811s, old globe-shaped duds and some octal
tubes.

Free for postage. If more than one person wants them, I can divide them equally
into 2 very similar groups.

> I did but that was 50 years ago! And they weren't anymore when I got done!

I confess to having hacked one up back in 79-80 when I went off to
school. One of my professors was a bigwig with the Navy in WWII, he
had a NIB BC-455B which he traded me for a Radiola III sans tubes that
he wanted to transistorize. Silly me, I just thought the Command set
was so cool. He, from memory, helped me rewire the filaments and do a
few other things including a BFO. I used an old electro-dynamic
speaker from a Philco radio and WOW did it work well.

The tuning is so granular on it that tuning was a breeze, and it did
work well on CW, but wandered all over hell and back. Today it sits on
the desk of my office at home, used mainly for AM SWLing. Tim's
program on WBCQ comes booming in with just a short (10-15") copper
wire sticking up from the antenna terminal.

I don't regret having modified the rig because I not only learned a
lot from it, but also developed a greater appreciation for preserving
old rigs. As Bob points out, these things aren't getting any younger
or anymore plentiful. The 'investment' crap is lost on me, though -
I'm a user first, preserver/collector second. There's just something
about this kind of 'living history', along the same lines as seeing a
P-51 flying at an airshow.

I do wish I'd picked up more stuff which, even in the 80s, was still
quite cheap. Finding a NOS ARC-5 receiver in a box for $10 was
considered high. Guess I just thought they'd be around forever?
