[AMRadio] Old Novice Days

2005-02-19 Thread ronnie.hull
a recent qso about novice days, stimulated my interest and I got out my old
log books. My very first cq qso was on november 24, 1969, with WN8AAD, George
in Hamden Ohio, on 7.160mhz, at 22:45I wonder whatever happened to ole
George?

Anyway, I was running an Eico 720 and a Drake 2B with a dipole of course!

I staid on 40 until the spring of 1970 when I discovered 15 and 10 meters.
Suddenly, my lowly 50 watts of output was working the entire world. The
Acquistion of a TA-33Jr and a rotator and 50' of heigth, really opened up the
airwaves. Man, those were fun days.

I have little or no luck in locating an owner of this transmitter. A
gentleman in Cleveland had one but I am unable to reestablish contact.

I have one restored - see the CRA website in the Album section on the
homepage and then click on the Heavy Metal article for a picture of this
unit next to my restored Collins 20V-3.

I need the dimensions of the three back panels that enclose the wiring and
components. These are three U shaped panels that are painted a lovely
blue color.

Would anyone know of an owner of this 1947 transmitter? Or, would know the
gentleman from Cleveland who was restoring one?

Thank you.

I swear I remember mom getting her ticket in 1967. She is WB5BBF,
recently upgraded to general and renewed her ticket for another 10 years.

Even then, I *thought* I recalled the novice frequencies on 40m being
from 7100 ~ 7150kc.
The fone band was the same as it is now... 7150 ~ 7300kc.

Are you sure your first QSO was on 7160kc?

Nice to remember the good ole days Ronnie.

No amount of Foreign radios or internet will ever beat that.

I arrived in 1955 with homebrew transmitter, regen receiver and then
Haliscratchers S77 and ARC-5 receiver. Better than Hershey !!

Keep Going. 73 DE Charlie, K0NG ..

The Novice 40m band in late '60's/early '70's was 7150 to 7200. I had
crystals on 7173 and 7175 and 7163(I think). Lots of fun with Ameco AC-1 and
Drake 2-A(sadly, don't have either one now).

My Novice Frequency in the 50's was 7156. You could work the entire Novice
band with one crystal. It wasn't uncommon to tune up the band 20 kHz and
hear someone returning your CQ call five minutes after you stopped
sending. Lets face it...we all did the same thing hoping someone would hear
us.

I got my general in 1970 and I got the very first WB Call in Shreveport. My
friend Jerry got WA5ZZL about 3 months before I got my general. Your mom had
to have gotten her general after 1970.
I remember how badly I felt to be the first one in shreveport with a 'WB'
call.. LOL

I don't seem to have a problem with the signal level going in to
 the sound
card. On strong signals WinPSK tells me to reduce the input level.
 But with
this setup I am able to receive PSK signals I cannot hear in the
 stationspeaker.

You are getting quite a voltage step-up with that arrangement.
 You will
get more than enough level into the sound card that way. I would
 be a bit
worried about overdoing it and maybe wiping out the sound card input

PSK31 is a nice system to replace TTY. But this form of Phase modulation is
nothing new. We used it for disk drive encoding in the 60s and I belive it
was actually invented during WWII. I think is was called Harvard Code. And
Manchster Code was 2F modulation.
