RE: [AMRadio] Ashtabula Bill, 814 tube, Huntsville Hamfest
The 814 has a 5-pin socket, the same as the 807. It is a pentode, with a separate pin connection for the suppressor grid. For data on this tube, go to http://datasheets.electron-tube.net/sheets/049/8/814.pdf I plan to attend the Huntsville, AL hamfest this coming Saturday, 18 AU. Hope to see some of you there. Don, K4KYV Don, I tried the 814 before in my original Viking I where I used about 1500 volts on the plate modulated by a pair of 8417's. It worked very well until G1 shorted to the filament. I replaced the tube, and some months later the same thing happened. I later replaced the tube with an 813, and there were no more failures. In looking back I wonder if the failures were due to defective tubes, improper operating conditions, or maybe a parasitic oscillation. Whatever the case, the 813 survived when two 814's did not. If I had a box of 814's I'd be tempted to use them again. [AMRadio] HeathKit VF-1 Viking 2 wiring
Can anyone help me with the wiring mods needed to use a HeathKit VF-1 VFO with my Viking 2 transmitter? The VFO came to me wired for a Globe Scout. I need to know what the wiring is for it to be powered by the Viking. Also the VF-1 has a plug for a crystal socket, can I change it to a PL-259 to connect to the VFO connection on the Viking which is a SO-239. 73, Ron http://radioheaven.homestead.com/AMstation.html __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
Re: [AMRadio] HeathKit VF-1 Viking 2 wiring
Ron, Unless someone has done some rewiring, it should be fairly straightforward to use the VF-1 with the Viking II. The VF-1 requires 6.3 VAC for filaments and 250-350 VDC @ 15-20 ma for HV. The Viking II has 6.3 VAC and 300 VDC so the power supply for the VF-1 is no problem. On the VF-1 socket in the back Pin 1 is ground; on the Viking II (VII) Pins 1, 2,4,and 6 are grouind. Wire VF-1 Pin1 to VII Pin 1 for ground. Wire VF-1 Pin 4 to VII Pin 3 for B+ Wire VF-1 Pin 2 to VII Pin 7 for filament. On the VII, Pin 8 is a connection to the internal keying circuit. Wire center of plug for the Key Jack on back of VF-1 to VII Pin 8. Suggest using a shielded wire. I am using a PL-259 to connect the output of the VF-1 to the VII without problems. Hope this helps. 73 Mac WQ8U Hillsborough, NC Ron Lawrence kc4yoy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Can anyone help me with the wiring mods needed to use a HeathKit VF-1 VFO with my Viking 2 transmitter? Re: [AMRadio] HeathKit VF-1 Viking 2 wiring
Hi Ron, Yes, you can put a PL-259 on the coax from the VFO. Pinout for 8 prong octal socket on the Viking II: 1, 2, 4 6: Ground 3: B+ 300VDC 5: NC 7: 6.3VAC Heater 8: Cathode of first oscillator V6. (provides cathode keying) Heath VF-1 cable color code and original connections: 1:Shield: (Ground) 4:Red: B+ 8:Green: Cathode of 6AU6 (Cathode keying line) 2:Yellow: 6.3VAC Heater On your original VF-1 octal plug, pins 6 and 7 may be connected together. This connecton MUST BE REMOVED or you will short the Viking II filament voltage to ground. 73 and have fun. By the way, did you get the pix I sent the other night?
