[AMRadio] New England Amateur Radio Festival (NEAR-Fest II) Events Schedule

2007-09-25 Thread Todd, KA1KAQ
Some will recall that the long running (33 yrs) Hosstraders hamfest in
NH ended with the retirement of the crew in February of this year.
Thanks to Mike W1RC, who took the initial steps to reserve the
Deerfield Fairgrounds and then put together a great group of worker
bees, an event enjoyed for decades by many lives on. Our first run in
May went exceedingly well, so we've moved forward by adding more
content to the October event.

For those who live close enough or will be traveling to attend, the
schedule of guest speakers and workshops has been posted. Briefly:

Friday October 12th

3:00 PM: DXing 101 with Neil Kaltman, K6SMF

5:00 PM: The R-390A Receiver Workshop with George Rancourt, K1ANX

Saturday October 13th

9:00 AM: Military Communications and the ENIGMA during WWII with Dr.
Tom Perera, Ph.D, W1TP

For a complete description:

http://near-fest.com/index.php?topic=170.0

We'll be adding the AM Dinner, jam session, gate, exam, and drawing
times to the schedule soon. Also detailed information on the AM Class
E and classic AM Vacuum Tube stations, AM Corral, and the Military
Radio and Vehicle gang.

Certainly worth a visit if you're heading up this way. We have a
separate area for the AMers too, called the AM Corral from the old
days of Deerfield.

[AMRadio] Johnson Valiant RF Plate Choke

2007-09-25 Thread w0ng
In my continued effort to restore my 1957 Johnson Valiant transmitter, I need
to replace the large pie-wound RF Plate Choke (L11) that connects via the
silver-plated top strap to the plate caps of the three 6146 final tubes.

If anyone has a good one to sell, please let me know what the shipped price
via priority mail to zipcode 80817 would be and if you will accept payment via
paypal.

Thanks 73

Well, someday you will, Brian. I'd love to have you come up and be the
Guest of Honor, and hang around with all of us guys including Gary,
Mike, Joe and the rest. You'd have a blast!, and the offer always
stands. Even after I'm living down there, I'm still going to help out
with the 'fest and make trips up to it.

Sounds like a National R-175A. I'm certain one of our list memebers will
have one.
If no one offers one, let me know; I have a box full.

I don't think it's physically the same size as the R-175A, however I
think the 175A would do just fine. The one in the Valiant is larger
(taller). I think Peter Dahl also has some good plate chokes that
would work too, unless you want to get an original.

[AMRadio] NC-183D Alignment questions help

2007-09-25 Thread Van K7VS
I have a pristine NC-183D I picked up a year ago that I am finally getting
around to. Have replaced all the electrolytics and sound really good.
BUT...I cannot get it to track properly as I follow the alignment
instructions in the manual. I can set the top frequency on each band with a
small trimmer cap (this is the oscillator coil adjustment) but then
according to the instruction manual you adjust the low end of the dial by
moving a wire inside an inductor, which does move the lower frequency but
not nearly enough to get to the frequency they say you should see. Has
anyone else had that problem during alignment of this receiver, or am I
missing something. Have checked the voltages at the first and second
converter and they seem fine and have pulled off the mica cap across one of
the oscillator coils (1.8 to 5 Mhz) and it checked just fine (supposed to
be 1600 pf and reads 1615 pf). And have substituted a different 6BE6 in the
first converter and still can't get close to proper or accurate dial
tracking. I am 500+ Khz off no matter what I have tried. And thoughts on
this one! Thanks. Van, K7VS

PS I would like to hear from NC-183D owners that may have experienced this
problem or have some thoughts about what I am seeing. tnx
