[AMRadio] Wanted: 9-pin accessory plug for Ranger I

2007-12-06 Thread cemilton

Well, from the lack of responses I'm guessing this must be one of the
rarest parts known to the AM community.

So one final request... Anyone who may have an extra/not
needed 9-pin male plug for the accessory socket on the Ranger I (and
would be willing to part with i) please contact me off the list.

Thanks for looking.

[AMRadio] EL34/6CA7 temporary test replacements?

2007-12-06 Thread John King
My AM transmitter uses a pair of 6CA7/EL34 as
modulators.

I have no resting or idling current showing on the
meter where ther should be 50 milliamps of idle or
resting current for the two modulator tubes.

I had a catastrophic flash in the 5V4 low voltage
rectifier tube but the primary fuse did not blow.
Whatever caused the short or overload of the 5V4 must
have cleared itself such as a momentary arc. The EL
34s/6CA7s show very weak on my tube tester. One of
them is about 50 percent and the other about 30
percent. The 5V4 low voltage supplies the screen
voltage to the two 6CA7s. The 5V4 was replaced and
there was no further arcing of the rectifier. The low
voltage supply is now working. The manual says that if
the High Voltage is working and there is no resting
current, then there is probably no screen voltage on
the 6CA7 tubes.

I don't have a pair of 6CA7/EL34 tubes, at present,
but would like to put tubes in the modulator to see if
another pair will draw resting or idle cureent.
QUESTION.WILL ANOTHER AUDIO AMPLIFIER TUBE
SUBSTITUTE MERELY FOR A TEST? I have 6L6 tubes but
don't know if they can be substituted for a MINUTE to
see if there will be resting current. I may have some
5881s.

I am ordering 6CA7/EL34 tubes, but would like to
troubleshoot and have modulator ready when the tubes
get here.

If you can answer my question, it will be greatly
appreciated. 73, John, K5PGW

RE: [AMRadio] UTC CG-302

2007-12-06 Thread D. Chester

This auction is for an unused UTC plate transformer, Model CG-302.
Primary

voltage is 105, 115, 210, 220, or 230 volts AC. Secondary AC voltage is
950-750-0-750-950 volts; or you could also say either 1900 or 1500 volts
AC,
center-tapped. DC voltages and currents with suitable rectifiers are 760
or

610 volts in a full wave center-tapped configuration at 360 mA. In a full
wave bridge configuration there will be 1520 or 1220 volts at 250 mA.
These

are continuous ratings and with a choke-input filter, I believe. A
capacitor-input filter will give you slightly higher voltages. ICAS
current

ratings will be higher.

I would be a little leery of using it in fullwave bridge configuration
without knowing the insulation breakdown rating of the midtap. Many
transformers designed for the conventional two-diode full wave CT rectifier
circuit have a midtap that is not insulated for HV, so the winding
insulation to ground could break down, since the tap will be at
approximately half the high voltage potential with the full wave bridge.
This can also be a problem when using a CT rectifier configuration with the
filter choke in the negative side from midtap to ground. The tap will be at
a few volts DC potential, but the ripple voltage may peak at near the
voltage output of the power supply. The UTC catalogue or transformer spec
sheet may or may not give this data.

[AMRadio] I will trade a SX-28 for a BC348!!!

2007-12-06 Thread ronnie.hull
Wanted BC348 in operating condition and already converted to AC operation.
Must be electrically sound.

Will trade a complete SX-28 in working condition. There are some caveats
however. Someone who had this in the past has done a transistorized
conversion on the IF's. These transistors are mounted on tube bases. I don't
know if you could pull them out and put the original tubes back in or not.
This receiver does work!!! I have NO information on the conversion.

Front panel is good, better than most I have seen. Cabinet is good. Lid is
not warped like some. Audio Control has incorrect knob but otherwise, all
knobs are good.

ALL THE DEADLY paper caps in the inaccessible area under the band switch have
already been changed out to orange drops by some brave soul. If you have
never done this yourself.. well.. never mind. Its already done.

S-meter works, dials are good. What more can I say.

I'm trying to re-create on of my novice stations, thats why I want a BC348.
MUST NOT have any new holes in the front panel, an S-meter or any of that
crap. Just a BC348 converted to AC with the cabinet and correct knobs. A
shock mount base would be nice.

I think this is more than a fair trade, especially for the person that gets
the SX-28.

let me know

and Merry Christmas to all of you fellers

Reply by Jim Candela, WD5JKO:

John, I have one of my QRO Central electronics 20A projects where I
tried a EL-34 for RF Ab1 linear use for 160-20m. I tried the Svetlana,
Sovtek, and an old vintage KT-77. None of them did as well as a Teslovak
E34LS (this is not a typo, the tube number changed). This tube is
carried by the Penta Laboratory folks. This tube is more robust with a higher
Pd rating than the plane Jane 6CA7 / EL-34 (30w instead of 25w Pd).

You will find these hi-fi tubes a little finicky because the high Gm
means high gain, and variations in grid 1 bias and/or screen voltage
really move the idling current a bunch. Having provision to vary the static
G1 voltage is really a must, and regulating the both G1 and G2
 voltages are both very desirable.

In my main QRO 20a I use a pair of 7591's (get 60w PEP out) and I had
to regulate the G1 bias and G2 screen to maintain a stable DC operating
point for these tubes. The 7591 is kind of a baby 6550 and both are
very high Gm Hi-Fi tubes. Tubes like the 6L6/5881 have lower gain, and
therefore require considerably more peak grid swing.

Here is the link to Penta Labs:

http://www.pentalaboratories.com/Audiophile.aspx?dept_id=1516

My vote is to pay a little more and buy from Penta Labs,

Regards,
Jim

Subject: [AMRadio] I will trade a SX-28 for a BC348!!!

Wanted BC348 in operating condition and already converted to AC
operation.

Must be electrically sound.

Will trade a complete SX-28 in working condition. There are some caveats
however. Someone who had this in the past has done a transistorized
conversion on the IF's. These transistors are mounted on tube bases. I
don't

know if you could pull them out and put the original tubes back in or not.
This receiver does work!!! I have NO information on the conversion.

Front panel is good, better than most I have seen. Cabinet is good. Lid is
not warped like some. Audio Control has incorrect knob but otherwise, all
knobs are good.

ALL THE DEADLY paper caps in the inaccessible area under the band switch
have

already been changed out to orange drops by some brave soul. If you have
never done this yourself.. well.. never mind. Its already done.

S-meter works, dials are good. What more can I say.

I'm trying to re-create on of my novice stations, thats why I want a
BC348.

MUST NOT have any new holes in the front panel, an S-meter or any of that
crap. Just a BC348 converted to AC with the cabinet and correct knobs. A
shock mount base would be nice.

I think this is more than a fair trade, especially for the person that
gets

the SX-28.

let me know

and Merry Christmas to all of you fellers

Too bad I just sold my last
BC-348..!!__

RE: [AMRadio] 6CA7/EL34 replacements

Please disregard my earlier post requesting
information about substituting other numbered tubes
for the 6CA7 for testing purposes.

I got the transmitter working with the "old" 6CA7/EL34
tubes. Now to order some!! Has anyone had much luck
with the cheaper import 6CA7 tubes such those sold by
Antique Radio Supply under the brand names of JJ
Electronics and Valve Art ???

Thanks for reading. 73, John, K5PGW
Reply by Jim Candela, WD5JKO:

John, I have one of my QRO Central electronics 20A projects where I tried a
EL-34 for RF Ab1 linear use for 160-20m. I tried the Svetlana, Sovtek, and an
old vintage KT-77. None of them did as well as a Teslovak E34LS (this is not a
typo, the tube number changed). This tube is carried by the Penta Laboratory
folks. This tube is more robust with a higher Pd rating than the plane Jane
6CA7 / EL-34 (30w instead of 25w Pd).

You will find these hi-fi tubes a little finicky because the high Gm means high
gain, and variations in grid 1 bias and/or screen voltage really move the
idling current a bunch. Having provision to vary the static G1 voltage is
really a must, and regulating the both G1 and G2 voltages are both very
desirable.

In my main QRO 20a I use a pair of 7591's (get 60w PEP out) and I had to
regulate the G1 bias and G2 screen to maintain a stable DC operating point for
these tubes. The 7591 is kind of a baby 6550 and both are very high Gm Hi-Fi
tubes. Tubes like the 6L6/5881 have lower gain, and therefore require
considerably more peak grid swing.

Here is the link to Penta Labs:

My vote is to pay a little more and buy from Penta Labs,

Regards,
Jim

John,
If you are in a hurry, try checking out your local guitar shop. I'll lay
odds that they have them available for about the same price you get for mail
order.

Re: [AMRadio] EL34/6CA7 temporary test replacements?

2007-12-06 Thread SBJohnston

I converted my Apache to use 6146 tubes instead of the EL34s for the
modulator. Worked like a charm.

2007-12-06 Thread Ken Zuercher
I agree about the guitar shop. The Marshall amps use
EL34 tubes and are pretty tough on them (like me, I'm
a guitar player) I like the JJ tubes as they were the
Tesla brand and are made in the Czech Republic. They
also have a model with beautiful blue glass envelope.
