[AMRadio] Why do some people capitalise ham?
Lately, on e-Ham, QRZ.com and elsewhere I see a lot of people spell ham radio as HAM radio. Why is this? I never noticed it until the last couple of years. I think it looks dorky as hell. Worse still, when it's just called HAM, as in I've been into HAM for several years now. I'm studying for the test so I can get my HAM. When I want my HAM, I go to SAFEWAY or KROGERS. Believe it or not, I have even seen it spelt H.A.M. Just a minor irritant, but I am beginning to see it all the time and wonder if anyone else has noticed this and if you find it annoying as I do. Re: [AMRadio] Why do some people capitalise ham?
Maybe some are referring to Handheld Amateur Radio or possibly they're referring to a Host Adapter Module or maybe they just feel proud to be a HAM. Of course, one could ask why DX, why CQ, why W1AW and not w1aw, etc. etc. Slang is slang; spell it or pronounce anyway you want. Of course, one could also ask why some don't use a spell checker. I never really cared for the term anyway... Nowadays, seems a lot of folks think you are talking about CB radio when you use it too. I think it is to show that CB is not their only radio hobby. Here I hear some of the locals who got their 2-meter license also getting on 11m. The only difference is that they use calls on 2m. Re: [AMRadio] Why do some people capitalise ham?
I can sure think of more important things to be concerned about Why is it that so many people seem to want to tear down history and traditions? The term ham may not have been originally established in a complimentary way or to positively identify us, but it grew into a foundly used term that everyone recognized. If you don't care for the nickname or slang of HAM for amateur radio, then just don't use it. I for one, am proud of the tradition. I have been licensed for nearly 49 years and I always thought of the term as prestigious, not something to be looked down upon or made fun of by thse who apparently don't know what it is all about anyway. Some will refer to us as CBers and don't know the difference, or even care for that matter. If the general public views the term as something negative or nerdly or whatever, then maybe we have a PR problem, but we probably have much greater concerns to direct our attention toward. I, for one, would sure like to see more positive promotion of our hobby and of our history instead of all this negative tearing down of what many of us hold dear. What does this have to do with AM radio anyway? 73, Jack, W9GT Slang is slang; spell it or pronounce anyway you want. Of course, one could also ask why some don't use a spell checker. Re: [AMRadio] Why do some people capitalise ham?
I believe Don's real issue might be the capitalization of HAM and/or the looseness of how it's used in printed or spoken dialogue. And to answer you last question, AM radio, is amateur radio, is HAM radio, is hobby radio. Pete, wa2cwa On Fri, 7 Mar 2008 11:37:50 -0800 (PST) JACK C. Re: [AMRadio] Another sticking point
Are we getting picky now? Not all fixed stations are base stations. My definition of base station is the station at your base of operations; in my case, my home. You might have a fixed station at another location that is not your base station. However, I agree that the ads should refer to fixed stations. I think they use base station to differentiate fixed stations from mobile stations. It also gives a degree of personal possession. Something to enhance your base station sounds better than something to enhance your fixed station. Carry on. Ed K6UUZ On Fri, 7 Mar 2008 13:10:47 -0800 (PST) charles L. [AMRadio] Re: Why do some people capitalise ham?
I'm not sure that everyone who commented on this topic actually read my initially posted message and fully understood the subject line . This was not intended to debate the merits pro and con of using the word ham to designate amateur radio. I see the term in my amateur radio magazine collection going as far back as the 1920's and possibly earlier, and I have heard it in popular use for all the 49 years I have been licensed. I use it regularly myself even though I believe the prestige associated with the term has been downgraded in recent times. The origin of the term has been debated for nearly a century with no definite conclusions, so I doubt if anyone is going to discover it or come any closer to the answer here. My question was merely in regards to the way I have often seen it written recently, with the word spelt in all capitals, as if it were an acronym. To me, this seems dorky and faintly embarrassing*. (* see http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1308749/posts) And isn't AM a part of ham radio? Therefore any issue regarding amateur radio IS an AM issue... perhaps even more so, since we probably maintain a higher profile to the general public than hams who run SSB, CW or data, with our voices carrying through intelligibly over shortwave radios, as well as telephones and other electronic devices that inadvertently act as radio receivers.
