[AMRadio] Gas and mecury rectifiers

2008-04-29 Thread John coleman
Don,
I don't know why but this has stuck a curiosity point in me.

Do you know anything about the pressure in these tubes? I'm sure
the mercury vapor rectifier tubes are supposed to be vacated of air, but
what is the mercury vapor pressure and what is the difference in pressure
from cold to hot. I wonder if it is just a result of a vacuum leak that
causes some type of corrosion on the anode.
Also I wonder what the gas pressure is in the 3B28 type gas
rectifiers and what the density of the gas is. Maybe it is possible that in
the gas rectifiers the gas may actually seal or push the atmosphere away
from any leak.
In any case I bet that if mercury tubes where heated from day one
on, that they would have many more hours of good operation.

Science fiction?
Maybe the reason they need several days for heat up and then slow
anode voltage increase is to force air out that has accumulated over years
of setting cold. This might not be possible in a vacuum rectifier but in a
mercury rectifier it might be that the mercury vapor pressure might displace
enough of the air forcing it back out 5the hole it came in enough to allow
it to work or perhaps the lengthy time is just causing a more homogenous mix
of the vapor and atmospheric gasses.
Science fiction?

[AMRadio] Re: Gas and mecury rectifiers

2008-04-29 Thread D. Chester

I suspect it has to be a pretty good vacuum to ionise the mercury, just like
a gassy tube turns blue with high voltage. I have never found ary articles
giving the details, but there may be one in my archive of IRE Proccedings.

Maybe the reason they need several days for heat up and then slow
anode voltage increase is to force air out that has accumulated over years
of setting cold. This might not be possible in a vacuum rectifier but in
a
mercury rectifier it might be that the mercury vapor pressure might
displace

enough of the air forcing it back out 5the hole it came in enough to allow
it to work or perhaps the lengthy time is just causing a more homogenous
mix

of the vapor and atmospheric gasses.

I suspect it would push mercury vapor out as well, and maintaining a
constant ratio of MV and contaniments inside the envelope, since heating the
filament enough to push air out of the hole would also vaporise the mercury.
I think the ash is a reaction between the mercury and the anode metal. It
is probably a side effect of some underlying change in the structure that
causes the tube to arc over, since with even a tiny speck the tube seems to
become prone to arc.

It also reminds me of some grades of steel which, when heated red hot,
sheds its outer layer of slag with a similar looking ash.

[AMRadio] ARRL and 80/20

2008-04-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

All
A lot of hot water has gone under the bridge regarding the ARRL on this
discussion list.
Just a few comments from this end of the woods-
First, the fact that only 20% of hams are members of ARRL, well, I would say
that not even 20% of hams are active at all in ham radio. In fact, I would be
surprised if even 10% of licensed hams are active weekly - make a contact, even
just one qso in any mode. Out of say 600,000 hams in the us, do even 6,000
make a daily contact/qso? What would the total number of daily qso count be
today?
Second, you can easily contact ARRL.
From the arrl.org.
You can send e-mail to anyone at ARRL Headquarters if you know their name or
call sign. The second half of every Headquarters e-mail address is @arrl.org.
To create the first half, simply use the person's call sign. If you don't know
their call sign, use the first letter of their first name, followed by their
complete last name. See the list of ARRL email addresses for examples.
If all else fails, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and it will be routed to
the right people or departments.
http://www.arrl.org/contact.html
THIRD, if anyone is really hot about ARRL, why don't you just collect the
various posts to this list, edit them in a readable form, and send it off to a
few of the people at QST? See above for instructions.
