In these troubled times I think the Winners certificate should taken to a

Re: [AMRadio] DRAKE 2B`

2008-12-22 Thread cemilton

 Hi Bob,

I have a 2-A... the mute setting should be the same as the 2-B.

First, when using "mute" function, the front panel switch should be left in
STBY.

The external relay you use should be GROUNDED on RECEIVE and OPEN on STANDBY.

Sequence of the relay contacts should be such that the receiver is muted BEFORE
the transmitter makes RF and that the transmitter stops making RF BEFORE the
muting is removed.

I have a Dow-Key with external contacts that does the job when I use it with
the EICO 720 or the DX-60.

Hope this helps.

[AMRadio] Idea - SWL awards too

2008-12-22 Thread Joseph Cotton
>>He also awarded 'points' for SWL reports, including best-sounding
audio and so on.

All
Just a suggestion - how about letting NON HAMS into this contest as
SWLs? Sure, let the Short Wave Listeners help YOU out by sending in
their reports. But what incentive does that give to the SWLs to send
in reports?

Let SWLs get points for their reports, and give awards to SWLs for the
best reports, and so on.

I think that it would be a GREAT event for hams to invite non-hams
into Amateur Radio. It is very easy to get a short wave radio
receiver. But most SW receivers do not have a BFO for SSB or CW
listening. It is mainly the AMers that would be the best introduction
for non-hams.

And guess what? there is very little to listen to on Short wave
anymore, in the commercial broadcasts. I betcha that lots of kids
would join in.

This kind of event would get a lot of attention from the public if it
was advertised or publicised correctly. Call it the Great American
Shortwave Promotion or something similar. (GASP?)

What does the list think of this idea?

I can't answer that for you Ken, particularly
since neither you nor I
came up with the concept to start with. It was
Bill's idea for
creating some enjoyable, laid back AM activity
around the holidays. A
pretty good one in its original form, in my
opinion. Keep in mind that
the rules have been rewritten a bit since Bill's
original event.
Fortunately for us we don't have to figure out the

whether or not to take part.

Nothing that I'm aware of Ken. No different than
calling a stick a
stick, a rock a rock, or a troll a troll, really.
But again - if you
really want the specifics, you'll have to consult
Bill's original
rules published in ER, his posts on AMfone (maybe
here as well), or
maybe even drop him an email. That's what I did.

He also awarded 'points' for SWL reports, including best-sounding
audio and so on. Nothing you can do to garner those points beyond
having a strong, pleasant sounding signal on the air, heard and
reported by many. He's been pretty insistent about it being a 'rally'
vs contest, with the WINNER being more like a 'best of show'. It's
true that you'll always have a few who will trample you to get there
first, but I don't think that was Bill's intention. For further
clarification though, I'd suggest looking up some of his posts on the
subject on amfone.net, Ken.

That's the spirit, Jim: find out how to make the gear viable for the
event. The term 'Heavy Metal' is a big clue here. Using a big amp
would help to get the station up to the weight limit as well (250
lbs/250 watts IIRC?).

When Bill KD0HG started this event, he was pretty clear about the
reason for having it: to encourage owners of BIG tube gear like
converted BC transmitters, big military and even HB rigs to get their
fine signals on the air. His desire was to have more of a 'rally' like
a motorcycle gathering than a 'contest' mentality. Anyone can play,
including ricebox owners, since the underlying purpose is to encourage
more AM operation. The only stipulation was that in order to be
eligible to get the Heavy Metal trophy, you have to be running Heavy
Metal.

After Ray took over ER the rules were modified to include big Class E
rigs as well, since a few guys had built those and were feeling
ignored I guess. Bill again made it clear that the event wasn't meant
to be a contest, nor to exclude anyone from joining in. I always felt
the Class E group should run a similar event to draw attention to
their specialty and encourage even MORE interest and participation,
but that's another story.

With SSB 'contests' nearly every weekend along with the
above-mentioned CX and a myriad of nets, there is no shortage of
opportunities to exercise the classic SSB tube gear. Better still,
throw the monster amp in line and run some real Heavy Metal for the
event. The more, the merrier. After all, we're here for AM, right? (o:
