[AMRadio] Strange rectifier configuration in the audio section of an Xmitter I'm working on.?

2009-01-23 Thread M. K. Hess
Hi Folks,

I'm working on the audio 1st stage of a Gates BC-1H transmitter. It has a
rectifier with 4 zener diodes
however, unlike most set ups where there are 4 of the same diode, this is
using 3 different types, all
of the same class, but with just a wee bit different specs

It's using:
2x 1N3337A - 75V Zener (540 mA max, 56 Vrev Max)
1x 1N3338A - 82V Zener (490 mA max, 62.2 Vrev Max)
1x 1N3340A - 100v Zener (400 mA max, 76 Vrev Max)

I only note above where the values are significantly different

I'm just curious... Why do it with these 3 different diodes???
What does that buy them?

Would the world end if I used 4 of the 1N3340A - 100V Zeners (since I have a
slug of them in my parts box) as replacements??

Your sage wisdom is appreciated!

2009-01-23 Thread Bob Peters
Tom You know what you are correct about Identity.
I wanted and received a 1 X 2. Come to find out
the original W1PE was a diehard CW Op of which I
am not. I am a diehard AMer and phone op. When I
purchased a brick at the ARRL Patio I made the
mistake of putting just W1PE on it. After thinking
about that what I did is honor the original Op.
That is not a bad thing but an interesting thing.
..

I still love my call sign better then my old one
of K1JNN. That was always a tongue twister.

Looks like they are after two different regulated voltages - 182 v and

would be a bit out of range - 18v high and 50 v high.

[AMRadio] Vintage event includes no AM

2009-01-23 Thread VJB
I was a little puzzled when I saw this announcement about an event honoring
Jack Binns. You may know the name as the guy who penned an introduction to the
RADIO BOYS series of juvenile books from the early 1900s as the exciting
pursuit of "wireless" was catching on.

I wrote to one of the organizers, who acknowledged their event does not include
AM. He hasn't written back as to whether vintage gear might at least be part of
the CW activity.

They, and we, have missed an opportunity to promote our part of the hobby. If
you share my disappointment, please drop them a line.

Just saw this on QTH.COM, sad news indeed for the VHF community. Gary was one
of my first WSJT QSOs on both 6m and 2m:

Gary Gompf passed away on Thursday January 22 as a result of a heart attack as
he was driving from Batlesville, OK to Texas. He was the original owner of W7FG
VINTAGE MANUALS for many years. Gary will be missed by his many friends.

[AMRadio] Need Collins 75A-2 IF Xfmr

2009-01-23 Thread w0ng

Hello All -

Does anyone by chance have a spare IF transformer for a 75A-2 receiver?

All four of the IF transformers in the 75A-2 are identical units with
the cans labeled as #278-0084-00.

If you might have one you can sell, please email me a shipped price and the
methods of payment you accept.

A good working used IF xfmr is fine.

I'm trying to restore my prized 75A-2 and only need this one part to finish up.

Thanks & 73, Bill Pancake, w0ng, Fountain, CO 80817

[AMRadio] Michael J. Copps Named Acting FCC Chairman

2009-01-23 Thread Mike Duke, K5XU
Here is the text of the announcement from the ARRL site.

During the 4 years I served on the Consumer Advisory Committee at the FCC,
he attended most of the meetings, and appeared to at least listen to what
the committee said.

I found Mr. Martin to be a big disappointment in that regard.

Mike Duke, K5XU

Michael J. Copps Named Acting FCC Chairman

On Thursday, January 22, President Barack Obama named current
FCC Commissioner Michael Copps
as Acting Chairman of the Commission. Last week, sources close to the
President mentioned Julius Genachowski would be nominated as Chairman. Copps
will
serve as Acting Chairman until a new Commissioner/Chairman is confirmed.

"I am honored to be designated as Acting Chairman of the FCC," Copps said in
a
statement
released by the FCC. "I thank President Obama for his confidence in me and
for this opportunity to serve. I know that I have a truly gifted and
terrific
team to work with. I pledge every effort I am capable of to help steer the
Commission through its current transition to new leadership."

ARRL Chief Executive Officer David Sumner, K1ZZ, congratulated Copps on his
appointment. "Whenever we have sought a meeting with him or his staff, his
door
has always been open to us," he said.

Currently serving a second term as FCC Commissioner, Copps began his first
term with the Commission in 2001. Before his appointment to the FCC, he
served
as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development at the US
Department of Commerce, where he was previously Deputy Assistant Secretary
of Commerce
for Basic Industries. Copps came to Washington in 1970, joining the staff of
Senator Ernest Hollings (D-SC) and served for more than a decade as his
Chief
of Staff. He has also held positions at a Fortune 500 company and at a major
trade association. Before coming to Washington, Copps was a professor of
American
history at Loyola University of the South. He received a BA from Wofford
College and earned a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill.

Upon being sworn for his second term as FCC Commissioner in 2006, Copps said
that "The last four and a half years have been tremendously transformative
for the world of telecommunications and the media. The future holds even
greater challenge. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues
on
the Commission, with the Congress and with all the other stakeholders to
help bring the most advanced, accessible and cost-effective communications
system
in the world to all American consumers."
