What ever happen to Otis ? I can guess that by this time is may be a SK. I
use to listen to him along with W4RKG on 75 meters in the 60's running some
beautiful a.m. I recall that Otis was in Shreveport La. Ma he had such a
sweet a.m. sound.

I would listen to him along with a large group on 75 using a Allied span
master reg. receiver that I build in 65.

Great memories, wish a.m. could be like that again.

Thanks so much for the info on Otis. Like I said, he and a few other had a

I always wanted a rig that uses the 833. It such a neat and different tube.
I have a good supply of 810's so I figured a pair will modulate one nicely.
I like the BTA-500/1MX's. As a matter of fact, I was supposed to be wheeling
and dealing on a -500MX with Eric, WB4VVI (SK) before he went SK. Oh well. I
like the prospects of the 810's and the single 833. It won't weigh near as
much as one of those boxes. I have some nice black krinkle panels so a
krinkle motif is in the cards.

Re: [AMRadio] single 833

2009-02-09 Thread k9muf
I built a transmitter with a single 833A modulated by a pair of 810s. I chose
that combination of tubes because of their looks and also because they do not
require any forced air cooling.
I put windows in front of the tubes so one can see the tubes glow. What a
beautiful sight.

I used my own design based on ideas from many of the old handbooks, mostly the
Editors and Engineers. Most of the information was not specific to an 833A but
to triodes in general. The circuit was varied to fit the parts I had on hand
and to the specifications of the 833A.

I used a modulation transformer and reactor from a 1kw broadcast transmitter.
I am using a pair of 6L6s to drive the 810s. For the interstage transformer I
rewound the secondary of an output transformer from an old broadcast receiver
that used a pair of 6L6s in the output stage.

I am using a common plate power supply for both the RF and modulator tubes that
puts out about 2200 volts.

The RF carrier power is about 300 watts when driven with about 35 watts.

Now here is the problem I am having with it.
I am getting acoustical talkback when it is modulated and I can't find out
where it is coming from. I have temporarily substituted a different mod
transformer and bypassed the mod reactor, but I am still getting it.
So that is where I am at now. I don't want to put it on the air until I get
that problem resolved.

beautiful a.m. I recall that Otis was in Shreveport La. Ma he had such a sweet

I would listen to him along with a large group on 75 using a Allied span

Great memories, wish a.m. could be like that again.

Re: [AMRadio] 833 AM rig

2009-02-09 Thread John Coleman
Ok here's the deal. Otis runs a single 833 in the class C final and modulates
with a pair . The single 833A is in a circuit for push pull but only has the
one tube in it. and only one nuetralizing capacitor and only one coupling
capacitor to the ballanced tank with swinging link. The grid circuit is a push
pull tank but any other typewill work as it's only function is to supply the
proper driver to the final grid. The plate tank is a push pull balance type
because the phase inversion for the neutralizing cap is accomplished by the
ballanced plate tank. The tank circuit is shunt fed to keep the DC and audio
off of the tank circuit. The center tap of the coil does have a RF choke but
it goes to ground to insure that there is no audio or DC on the tank
components. He used to run about 3000 volts on the plates but after the AM
power reduction thing he ran about 2500V at 200 ma. I can pretty much draw the
circuit but you may wish to consult the web page at
http://www.qsl.net/wa5bxo/pptriodes/pptriodes.htm

Please note that the circuits do not depict the shunt feed tank coil. But I
can draw that up if someone needs it.
The above web page has not been proof read by anyone that is good at it, so
there may be some spelling, grammer and other mistakes in it.

Shipping for ChinaHarbor Freight is very nominal, and independent of
weight,as I recall it's factored on cost of the item.
I think a 50lb vice for $60 will sell the same cost as a $60 set of
micrometers, unless they've changed...

[AMRadio] 1 kw broadcast transmitter available--free

I have access to a free CCA Electronics Model 1000-D AM broadcast
transmitter.

It must be picked up as soon as possible and you are responsible for all
loading and moving out of the building. The transmitter is in Southern
Alabama. This would be a great rig for 160 or 75 meters. The transmitter is
currently on the low end of the AM band560 kHz. This transmitter was
working when taken out of service 2 years ago. It has a pair of 4-400As
modulating a pair of 4-400As.

THIS IS FOR HAM RADIO USE ONLY.I will be your worst nightmare if I catch
you trying to sell it on eBay or putting on the broadcast band, etc.

Please have interested parties contact me ASAPfirst come, first served.
