Re: [AMRadio] Comment from N0JEF

2010-02-14 Thread D. Chester
When running a transceiver on AM you want to avoid hitting the ALC
altogether. This includes the ALC function in the radio as well as the
linear. As soon as you trigger the ALC, the carrier level abruptly drops
down, producing a distorted, anaemic sounding negative controlled carrier
effect. If there is an easy to do so, disable the ALC altogether when
running AM. Otherwise, keep the positive peaks just below the ALC
threshold. ALC is designed for SSB and was never intended to be run with
AM.

If the ALC cannot be disabled, it can serve a useful purpose as a positive
peak overmodulation indicator. Run the output just under the point where
you begin to see some indication of ALC action on voice peaks.

The best way to make sure the signal is fully modulated but that nothing is
being pushed into the flat-topping/distortion region is to monitor the
envelope pattern of the signal with an oscilloscope. At one time, all major
manufacturers offered a monitor scope as a matching accessory to go with
each of their transceiver lines. A modulation monitor scope is NOT the same
thing as a modern transceiver's panoramic display.

To me, operating a phone transmitter (AM or SSB) without a monitor scope is
like driving a car at night with the headlights turned off.

[AMRadio] SDR-IQ audio

2010-02-14 Thread Bernie Doran
I found the issue, it apparently needed a sound card with more guts,
installed a mid range card yesterday ($42) ran the audio through the NBFM
plug on the 75A2 so I can flop back and forth. It is now similar with a
slight difference due to sloping passband Vs near vertical drop on the sdr.
all in all at this point, I have to say the issues were self generated and
the other interesting features on the sdr are pretty amazing. Maybe I was
suffering from a geezer attack!! Turned 73 yesterday, please send all gifts
$$$ preferred to QTH listed in QRZ. 73 Bernie W8RPW

[AMRadio] Classic exchange

2010-02-14 Thread Todd Carpenter
Anyone having any luck? My operating conditions seem to be poor. Heard some
worked none. Not even on vhf fm. Most stations heard were on 40. None on 20.
Faint on 75. Had better luck running 5 watts on RTTY last night. Worked 4
stations. WY7, in wyoming, a W5, a W6, and a W0. Heard lots of 6's, 7's, and
stations all over US and Canada. Also heard Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia,
and a few I didnt recognize. All on 20 meters, ~ have a homebrew ground plane.
I didnt hear any SSB/FM cx yet. Will try again on 20 meters when i get back
from Wally World in a little while.

Re: [AMRadio] ht20

2010-02-14 Thread Jack Schrader
Hi Greg and thanks for your suggestions with respect to my ht20. I have not
been able to check the modulator(807?) yet as I have it in a rack mount and
all the rf shields are in place and you know what a bear it is to remove all
those screws but I will try to get it done this week and will let you know
what I find.

But thanks again and hope you are not snowed in. We in Maine have gotten
nothing out of those storms.

I hope you remember me, Jack with the ht20.

Got the ht20 hooked up and have god output in cw but not am. I hooked up
 a
100w 210v test light to the antenna output on the ht20 but when I speak
 into
the mic on am the light gets dimmer not brighter. Any idea about that?

 TnxJack

 Possibilities:

 1) audio out-of-phase
 2) insufficient drive to grid of final
 3) final not properly loaded
 4) insufficient capacitance in filter of HV supply to final/modulators
 5) improper impedance match in mod tranny

If after checking the obvious and it still occurs, just put it on the
air. I have one rig that does this but still sounds quite acceptable.
You can look deeper into it later, but have some fun with it in the mean
 time...

Does the modulation envelope look OK on the scope?

Fair Radio Sales,

  , lists 4D32's for $17.50 each.

Surplus Sales of Nebraska has them for $35 each. In the good old days when
they were used in the Viking I and the Korean War made them hard to find, a lot
of guys substituted an 829B. My own Viking I that I acquired just a couple of
years ago has a very pretty pair of 807's in the final.
